Well, avid reader of 606, joining not606 and first post - go easy Looking at Sunderlands style of play at the moment, I think we're playing some decent football. Gyan is now our 1st choice striker and even though i'm looking ahead, what kind of a partner will he need? We have frazier coming back, but will he be able to play alongside Gyan or do you think Bruce will be looking to bring in a striker with some height and power? Who would be a realistic signing?
i think campbell will be able to play alongside gyan, but i think if we are going to bring someone in it will be someone a bit more physical, who can hold the ball up and cause tall defenders problems from corners. we play some lovely football now, but we need a battering ram plan b up front.
I also think that Campbell and Gyan will compliment not only each other, but the whole midfield with their pace and movement, i think and hope they will cause mayhem. That said, we need an option, so a big, powerful front man is needed as well. It's all well and good playing great football, but if we need to change it we can't at the minute. So, in summary, both!
BSM and BB have both used a vriation of the key to this question - plan b and option(s). The time spent by coaching staffs studying and preparing for the opposition, mean teams are ready and set up to deal with a particular "style of play". Yes, let's look to play a certain way, but if it ain't working...... Postman pat illustrated the danger of NOT having any options in SA.
It's already been stated by both SB & NQ that they intend to go for a target man to complememnt Gyan, maybe trying to emulate the Quinn & Phillips partnership? I could see a Heskey type player fitting the bill and before i get shot down i don't mean Heskey i mean someone similar but with more skill, don't know if there are any out there but i think we need a player up front who can hold the ball up. At the minute we don't have that, it's just all out attack which is great to watch and seem to be effective to a point but i get the impression that this isn't SB's preferred style.
To be fair, I don't think Heskey would be a disaster for the team. He's playing well at the moment, and if we could get him for cheap, why not?
i've said before that i've not rated him but i'm slowly coming around, know there's a few on here who are fans, but if west ham go down........... carlton cole..??
BSM - Cole I thought was looking good a couple of seasons ago, but he had an injury (knee??) and since then according to an 'ammer I know, he's been s****. Good shout, but not for me now. I did suggest Kevin Davies before the season, too old and too much now he's got a cap?
well, like i said, i'm not totally convinced, and if you look at the mags board a lot of them are gutted they've been linked with a ã10m move. i like davies, but i can't see us spending good money on someone with no resale value, so yeah, possibly too old. think the most likely thing is bruce finding another star from abroad again
Whilst there's a case for Cole, Heskey and Davies, do they fit in with bringing in young hungry players? Not for me, it's gotta be Gignac, he'd cost around ã18million, but he's a young lad built like an ox. I have no doubt we'll look at Huntelaar, available unless Schalke win the champions league, although i personally don't rate him. There's not really an english option, so we're gonna be looking to the continent, i'm struggling to think of quality options, as the 'target man' thing is really used only by lesser teams, or as a plan b. The only one with a bot of class that springs to mind is Gignac, and we were heavily linked in January. It was bullshit that he was at the AOL, as he was playing for Marseille, i was watching it, ath the alleged time, but i think unquestionably there's an interest.
I think a more direct type of striker will be a perfect foil for Gyan, someone young and big, someone like the young Ipswich lad, Wickham. He would be my priority come the summer. Would fit in with our young squad as well.
kevin doyle would be a good choice for 3rd striker, but to partner him reguarly then we should ask man utd to part with danny welbeck permanantly, even if it costs us henderson as part of any potential deal
I thought about Wickham - looks like he'll have a good future in the game. Personally I can't see beyond Welbeck. The way he and Gyan passed to eachother during the game at Stamford Bridge was bordering on telepathy
I'd put all our efforts into securing Welbeck permanently. He, along with Campbell & Gyan would be enough to get us through when all of them are fit, and we continue with the 4-5-1 we're using at the moment. Another option would be a young striker, who is prepared to play 3rd/4th fiddle for a season or two.
Scumbag big Chris havent you got the message yet, just because Brucie is a mod you want the knife in anything he comments on, drop dead looser.
Don't worry about me rog, his patter doesn't get near me! I know all about him anyway, he's aware of this
