I am hopeful the recommendations from the fan led review are implemented. One or two offer a route into changing how clubs and owners can operate. The corporate governance one, solidarity levy and the golden share all can crack the door ajar a little bit.
Can anyone help with a better thread title please? I'm not sure ambition is the right word I meant but can't think of the right one
How many successful English clubs are run sustainably?? To be competitive we need a rich generous owner, KLD isn’t in the same league financially as the successful premier league clubs and has no intention of splashing the cash. I think KLD has aspirations to be a premier league club but I doubt he could sustain it or maybe want to sustain it. If we do get there under his ownership I think we would be sold very quickly
I think its important that there are more controls on what owners can do. I'd also suggest that clubs should be subject to statutory protections like listed buildings or ancient monuments, with owners having to apply to make certain changes and prosecution of owners for deliberate harm or negligence.
Works for me. It's clear what you mean It's nice to be able to discuss/debate this topic and get alternative points of view after the last week of in-fighting ad back-biting in the run up to the FA Cup game. Looking back it was a fraught week, not helped by the goings on in the BCB regardless of who you blame. Looking forward to the rest of the season
Its been an eye opener today just looking at other clubs and how much they are in debt to the owners or how much they are gambling on silly wages to turnover. There will be an awful lot of clubs in a serious mess when the new ffp rules fully kick in. I just hope the FA take a hardline stance to any breaches
Aye. Never realised so many of them were in that much debt. Makes you wonder if the PL is even a realistic option for a club that wants to be sustainable....
You would like to think it is, but incredibly difficult and it feels at times like its a scramble to the bottom for some of these owners, throwing away millions chasing premier league money
I don’t think it’s possible currently and won’t be unless wage caps are brought in, or limits on squad size. The price of decent young players are inflated due to the likes of Chelsea and Man City hoovering up all the talent on wages normal clubs can’t afford. That really needs to be changed to try and even the playing field.
With only 2 trophies to go for in a season and either promotion or if we were in the Premier League... a top 4 finish.....its difficult to know what would constitute ambition or success. For a club like Sunderland, I've always thought that a decent cup run in either cup and finish as high as we can in what ever league we are in would equal a decent season for me.. I know the limitation of the club and that's based purely on finances. Newcastle and Man City have proved if money is not an object, the sky is the limit. City have achieved that...Newcastle aspire for the same. For Sunderland we are where are now for now. But given all that, I wouldn't support any other club...the club is doing ok for me right now
I've been thinking about this for years now, a sort of "renationalising football", in the same way you might hear politicians talk about energy or the railways periodically. There's a decent thread idea there I just need think about it.
I was talking about this to my Liverpool supporting mate last night and even he agreed that the current imbalance in the Premier League and between clubs in general can't continue. As he pointed out, Liverpool sold Coutinho to Barca for silly money which allowed them the finances to buy 4 or 5 first team ready players and really push them on to success, but even they know that they are in a different market to the State owned clubs as they just cant/wont complete financially. That in itself sounds mental as they spend a fair amount each window, but if you actually look at their squad depth its nowhere near as strong as their rivals.
Thought long and hard about this and given our size, history and fanbase we should be aiming for nothing less than top 10 each season. A sprinkling of decent cup runs every few seasons should not be out of our reach either. If you take a look at the current top 10 in the premier league its pretty frightening to think how far behind we are. Hand on heart do I think we can get to that point in the next few years with the current regime, no. That doesnt mean I dont like KLD, I love the fella, I just think he is part of the start of our climb back to the top table.
