I have already seen why Hull City is perfect for Fabio Carvalho after quiet Liverpool success
Championship side Hull City is the perfect place for Fabio Carvalho continue his development, writes Keifer Mac

Fabio Carvalho is set to join Hull City on loan for the rest of the season

For those in the fledgling stages of their Anfield careers, Hull is proving to be where the heart is.

Liam Rosenior may only be 14 months into what he hopes will be a long and prosperous reign at the MKM Stadium but already the defender-turned-manager is proving to be one of the best in class in the Championship, with Liverpool the latest Premier League side to trust their stars of tomorrow to be nurtured and evolved at Hull City's Millhouse training base.

Back in September, Tyler Morton, fresh from a successful loan spell at promotion-chasing Blackburn Rovers, Anfield officials decided a move to East Yorkshire would be the ideal one for the 21-year-old to take the next steps of a promising career that has already seen him start Premier League and Champions League games for Jurgen Klopp's side.

Morton's Anfield team-mate Fabio Carvalho looks set to join him in East Yorkshire for the remainder of the season after recently returning from an unsuccessful loan stint in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig. During his time at the Red Bull Arena, the 21-year-old made just three starts for Marco Rose's side.

Last month, the ECHO was on location at Hull City's training ground to catch up with Morton, who has enjoyed a stellar campaign at the MKM Stadium. Rather impressively in fact, just three months into his return to the Championship Morton has made 21 appearances already for the Tigers, been named as the EFL's Young Player of the Month and gained international recognition with England's under-21s. It is therefore no surprise that Carvalho, after watching Morton's success from afar, is said to have snubbed interest from Premier League sides Fulham and Wolves as well as Leicester City and Southampton in favour of signing for the Tigers.

On that December afternoon in Cottingham, the ECHO spoke at length with those who work at Hull City's training ground and have witnessed the club's transformation under Rosenior first-hand. Arriving in the early months of Turkish Tycoon Acun Ilicali's £30m takeover, the 39-year-old's appointment came after Shota Arveladze had left the club in danger of making an immediate return to League One. Fourteen months on and the picture is a far more rosier one at the MKM Stadium, with the Tigers seventh in the Championship and in with a real shot of ending their seven-year exile from the Premier League.

In discussing why Rosenior's return to East Yorkshire has been so successful, staff were quick to stress his considerable trust in youth, which is hoped will forge an exciting style of play that supporters can buy into. Indeed, such a plan appears to have resonated well with supporters already as proved by City's average attendance rocketing by just shy of 4,000 already this season.

In fact, even Morton couldn't hide his admiration of Rosenior, which he revealed predated his arrival in East Yorkshire, telling the ECHO: "I had played against Hull the season before but it was like a completely different team, a different style, a different way of playing and I loved it.

"I loved watching them and I had a couple of mates here, it was brilliant. Liam Delap spoke [highly] of the manager when I spoke to him, it was class and it really pushed me to come here. I’ve never been happier about a decision in my life, to be honest."

In adding Carvalho to the ranks, Rosenior is certainly keeping in with his promise. Of course, the last time the 21-year-old was lining up in the Championship he was part of the free-scoring, record-breaking Fulham side that stormed to league title glory in 2022. It's for that reason exactly that Liverpool moved swiftly to try and add the Portugal under-21 international to their ranks six months earlier than planned with an audacious move in January 2022 in the hope of fending off interest from a whole host of European clubs also keeping tabs on the then-Fulham starlet.

The Liverpool loanee will become Hull's 11th signing since June, and ten of those aged 24 or under with the likes of Morton, Scott Twine, Xavier Simmons, Aaron Connolly, Liam Delap and Jaden Philogene adding Premier League pedigree to the MKM Stadium.

After struggling for game time since leaving Craven Cottage 18 months ago, even at the age of 21 there will be ample pressure on Carvalho in his short stint in East Yorkshire. But with Rosenior already proving that he knows how to tap into the potential of future Premier League hopefuls, the 21-year-old can rest easy knowing he won't be the first or last to be reinvigorated by the impressive Rosenior.

It’s not a poor choice of words at all, he’s had few good games all season, can’t think of him ever having 2 good performances in a row, and has just been dropped from the team for the last 2 league games and hooked on 60 minutes at the weekend for a reason.

Struggling badly for form is exactly what he is.

Oh and he’s also a diving cheating Cnut

I think the fact he’s been dropped despite recently putting up decent numbers is quite telling to his overall form and contribution. But you’re right it is probably harsh

Didn't we go a whole season using only loanee keepers?

With the backing LR's seemingly getting this window, I suspect hard questions will be asked if we're not in the top 6 come the end of the season.

There's no place for sentiment, we need to be picking up points and we need to drop the deadwood; Christie, Vinagre, Lokilo, Traore, Twine. None of them have rose to the challenge and I suspect we'll see replacements for all this window. Replace them and ship them out. The likes of Vaughan and Jacob have shown they're more than capable backups.

No 'we' as in the club (Ilicali) said in the summer that we were close to the limit. Of course the McVities is my guess work, I even alluded to that in the comment by saying 'I reckon'.

    Grumpy.

whilst I wouldn’t mind one, I’m warming to the idea that if you have a team full of very talented technical players, you might not need one. Play everyone off the park with the sheer talent of the squad, seems to be somewhat working so far with half the team we might be seeing in Feb.

City want three more players before the month is out. One of those is goalkeeper Ivor Pandur, as we revealed on Sunday. City have agreed a deal in the region of £1.5m with Fortuna Sittard to sign the young Croatian stopper, and that's one that is likely to progress as the week wears on.

Bringing in a left-back remains a high priority and work continues behind the scenes to make that happen. The club have two active targets, both domestic-based, and both are keen to join the club. But it will come down to which one they can get over the line within their budget. In terms of those deals, striking a permanent one is the preference, but a loan deal cannot be ruled out. Ruben Vinagre is heading back to Sporting Lisbon so that frees up one of their loan spots and a sizeable chunk of salary.

A winger is also high on the agenda, and Manuel Benson is towards the top of that list. Benson has been told by Burnley that he can leave Turf Moor and is weighing up his options, as he was last week. Being left out of the FA Cup defeat at Tottenham last Friday night will not have helped his mood, while fellow target Anass Zaroury did play almost 70 minutes. Ryan Kent is no longer a live target at this juncture, despite being an option earlier in the winter.

Right-back is also something of an unwanted issue for Liam Rosenior, with Cyrus Christie's form dipping and now the experienced defender suffering from a hamstring injury which is likely to keep him out for a month. Skipper Lewie Coyle has been superb this season, but there have been talks about bringing in cover.

As it stands, there are no plans to recruit another striker, sources have indicated, despite the knee injury picked up by Liam Delap likely to keep him out for a chunk of the remaining weeks. It's hoped Aaron Connolly, Billy Sharp and a combination of their attacking wingers can fill the void until the 20-year-old Manchester City loanee recovers.

I think you need one to be successful in this style. Both teams who employ this style to the highest level have them in Rice and Rodri. I think it is a long term necessity but we may be able to get away with it until/if we go up. But long term it definitely needs addressing as teams play through the midfield way too easy. Fulham did it perfectly going from Seri to Palhinha when they went up.

No chance. Despite playing a few games in Scotland last season he's no way ready for professional men's football apparently

I know it makes certain posters very angry when I say this but it's come up again so I'm going to have to do it again: I really do think the general sentiment around Twine is unduly negative.

Yes, he's not played the last two league games, but it was the Christmas period; the odd change had to be made at some point and he'd started every game for months prior. If you look at his body of appearances over a longer period it's clear that he's one of our most trusted attacking players. Other players have been left out of the side for much longer spells, including Tufan (whilst fit) and Traore, who people are saying are ahead of Twine.

We know he's hard-working, presses well etc and that's part of what the management like about him, but he's also added goal contributions in the last couple of months; only Delap, Connolly and Philogene in the squad have more than him now. In terms of quality, he's probably our next best striker of a ball after Tufan and he's one of our better passers too. And none of that should be a surprise because we knew when we signed him that we were getting a player of significant quality who has scored and assisted throughout his career. Fans of other clubs still look at us getting him as a significant coup on a similar scale to the Philogene and now Carvalho deals, so I do struggle with the growing talk of him being a limited player and/or not good enough for this team.

From what I can tell, a big part of people's problem with him seems to be that when he's played on the wing, he doesn't take men on but often just receives a pass and moves it on. That's obviously true, he's not and out-and-out pacy winger by any stretch, but I don't think it's as big a problem as people think. You obviously want a player or two in the Philogene mold if possible, but having a player who does his bit passing and moving as part of a system in possession and can be clinical when it falls to him, is valuable too. Nick Barmby used to play that sort of game out wide, and Guardiola has had Sterling and Grealish in recent years playing that way to great effect. I think to some extent Twine is a victim of the modern phenomenon of people getting angry about the ball not always going forwards and straight to goal.

I will be curious to see how him and Carvalho get on together, have a feeling they may work well with one central and the other on the wing, interchanging a bit.

We still wont have a depth of wingers so one will certainly play on the wing at times

Both of whom can and do (did) regularly take their player on!!.
Barmby was playing in a very different team & system.
Twine just isn't suited to that role, but Rosenior rightly or wrongly has felt the need to play (waste) him out wide.
