Good Morning. It's Monday 8th January, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

    Bamford's wonder strike stuns Posh

Patrick Bamford's stunning volley helped the Whites, ease their way into the fourth round of the FA Cup, and keep their 100% (2024) win record intact, against a confident Peterborough side, unbeaten since November.

Many were surprised to see the likes of Rodon, Ampadu, Gray, Piroe and Firpo all start the game. Traditionally higher placed teams would use the early rounds of the competition to give youth an opportunity, but clearly Farke didn't get the memo.

Ethan Ampadu got Leeds off the mark in the 34th minute, with just his third goal in professional football. Jaidon Anthony's free kick was chipped into the penalty area where Bamford was waiting, but his heavy touch saw it fall nicely for the 23yo Welshman, who made no mistake from close distance.

Leeds second will resonate in the memory of fans for years, and could give Bamford the shot in the arm needed to turn around his ailing career. Ampadu's 50 yard punt up the pitch looked harmless enough, but with his back to goal, Bamford gracefully bought the ball under his spell, before spinning 180 degree's and volleying left footed past Talley from 25 yards.

Ampadu doubled his tally late on following a Dan James corner, but by that time Posh were already soundly beaten. The fourth round draw will be held at 7.50 this evening; what are the odds that Leeds will be drawn away for the 14th time in a row?

Roberts lined up to replace Spence

Leeds have turned their attentions to experienced Burnley defender Connor Roberts following Djed Spence's removal from Elland Road.

The 28yo is close friends with Joe Rodon, and along with Ethan Ampadu and Dan James, a big part of the Welsh International set-up. He played a big part of Burnley's title winning campaign last season, but has slipped down the picking order this season, starting just eight games, a contributing factor to his 6.00 Whoscored rating.

Roberts can operate on either flank, as well as right midfield, and is valued at around £6m. He netted 5 goals, and six assists for the Clarets last season, and has some engine on his, having played just over 4000 minutes of game time last time out!

    Farke keen on Carvalho

Leeds are one of a number of clubs who have approached Liverpool over the services of Portuguese starlet Fabio Carvalho.

He spent the first half of the season on loan at RB Leipzig, but was recalled last month after just 280 minutes of game time in all competitions.

Predominantly, he plays as an attacking midfielder, but can also play on the left wing. The red side of Merseyside splashed out £5m eighteen months ago for his services, but see him as part of their long term plans. He is highly thought of by Daniel Klopp who will want assurances that he will get plenty of game time.

Klopp and Farke have a close relationship which could help the Whites in their bid to bring him to Elland Road. Fulham, Wolves and Hull are also linked with the 21yo, though reports indicated he is top of Southampton's wish list.

    Popey lays into Firpo

BBC journalist Adam Pope laid into Junior Firpo during commentary of Leeds demolition of Peterborough Utd on Sunday lunchtime.

Popey described the former Barca's defending as embarrassing, claiming he was beaten far too easily. Leeds have been linked with a host of left backs this season, and with the Winter transfer window in full flow, surely they will bring in reinforcements at full back, especially after seeing Spence depart!

“Firpo is beaten far too easily,” “I have to say, that’s the weakest defending I’ve seen. It’s terrible. “Patrick Bamford gives the ball away but it’s all brought on because Firpo – it’s embarrassing, his inability to put in a challenge.”

    Morning all

Nice away win and consecutive clean sheets, no injuries, it’s set us up nice for our next league game.

Connor would be a good signing, I’m not convinced on Carvalho, he’s had a terrible time at Leipzig, he can’t be anywhere near ready and who would he replace.

Saying that, I don’t want a rival to get him either

Think this week we should see some transfer action, especially as we have a so called top team of Victor Orta’s and are even having to pay compensation for another one who we have poached from Aberdeen? Even temp Nick Hammond is staying until after the summer window closes. Spence gone back and we don’t have a RB besides Ayling who can’t get a game because either Shacks or Archie in ahead of him. Lets face it things at the club with full backs is a joke and has to be sorted. Byram is a RB but brought in to play LB but cant play more than half a match without getting injured. Emu Pope knows Firpo can’t cut it in this country so wish FARKE would shut up about not needing anyone …..

A deal for a versatile right back would already have been done.

NOBODY is going to get rid of a player however disruptive, unless they already have a replacement in place. It would be absolute suicide!

100% agree with this and why I thought FARKE comments about having enough cover at right and left back was ……….

Farke is saying exactly what I would expect him to, he would destroy the confidence of those he is reliant on should he say we are weak in those positions. If he said yes it's a problem area targets will double in price and opposition will target us more than they might do otherwise.

Well done Farke yesterday on team
    Selection. A relatively strong team
And got the job done. Sick and tired watching coaches for years showing no respect for the fa cup and putting out rubbish teams. Fans then left moaning for months after

True as most of us would have rested Ampedu, Rodon & Gray all of whom were excellent yesterday. Farke still made plenty of changes but at the same time put out a team that was strong and perhaps more importantly the players who came in weren't coming into a disjointed and cobbled together team as has happened too often with previous managers.

“On Thursday he was jettisoning Djed Spence, giving up on a loanee who, depending on who you speak to, can be the best right-back in the Championship, hard work or both. Farke wants a certain character in his squad and without going to town when he spoke about Spence’s premature exit publicly, the Tottenham defender was clearly not it.”

Not sure on the actual numbers but it would seem all our attacking options are fit and being utilized in some way or other by Farke.

    Rutter
    Piroe
    Bamford
    Summerville
    James
    Gnonto
    Anthony
    Joseph
    Poveda

That's nine players for 4 starting places.

So, none of this is news about Spence... his reputation is well known in the game. Does it not beg the question as to why a manager who is known as a disciplinarian and values a certain character type, would take him in the first place? One for Jambo.

    Good question milky.

And I'll get back to you on that one <laugh>

Seriously though we'd missed out on Max Arrons, who Farke clearly wanted and with time running out we maybe took a bit of a gamble given Spence's perceived qualities. There's also the factor that Farke has a little bit of previous with sorting out problem players like Cantwell at Norwich so maybe the thinking was if anyone can then Farke can.
