Sunderland boss Michael Beale looks ahead to derby with Newcastle https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/s...ss-michael-beale-looks-ahead-derby-newcastle/ By Scott Wilson MICHAEL BEALE wants to do everything he can to help Sunderland’s strikers build on Nazariy Rusyn’s first goal in a red and white shirt. The Ukrainian became the first striker to score for the club this season when he moved ahead of his marker to turn in Jack Clarke’s run and cross just before half-time against Preston…. Beale, whose side went ahead in the tenth minute through Alex Pritchard’s thunderbolt, said: “The story of the game is a number nine scores for Sunderland. He earned his goal today and it has been difficult for him. “His wife and children aren’t here. That must be hard for him, with everything going on back home and at this time of the year. He’s been here six months and he’s on to his third coach. I am delighted for him. “You can transfer talent, but someone has to be comfortable in an environment and we can’t forget that. We have to do a lot to help people settle and that goal will do him the world of good. "To get a standing ovation and a goal, what a way to start the year. Well done Naz. Jack’s run will be highlighted but Naz’s run and finish was excellent.” Sunderland remain in the play-off picture ahead of this Saturday’s FA Cup break when Newcastle United travel to the Stadium of Light. Huge focus will now turn towards the first Wear-Tyne derby in eight years but Beale is also looking forward to getting on the training ground with his squad. Since taking over the games have come thick and fast. He said: “It’s been a really good start, the schedule is ridiculous in the league, and I think I saw that second half. We had players out on their feet. The idea was to start fast, take the game to Preston and it was the best start with Pritchard’s goal. “I feel like I have been in the job for two weeks, with four games, two travels, and been trying to get round the group. “It was clear at Rotherham we weren’t going to score if we didn’t have a striker. Now Naz has had an opportunity. And he has contributed to the team. “The most important thing was to get a home win against a Preston team fighting with us around us for same positions. I am delighted with a clean sheet, second clean sheet in three games.” And Beale already knows what the visit of Newcastle means. He added: “It is a good week for everyone in this part of the world, good for the FA Cup because it catches the imagination for everyone. “We are a young team, they have had big investment, the rivalry is there for the two clubs in different positions. It is at home, it will be a sell-out - that is why you coach and follow your team.”

That's a very good point and something that shows up on here as it does in real life. Where I see people as truly, and unreasonably, biased is when people take a stand on a player and maintain it no matter what. O'Nien, as an example, has been chosen by every manager he's had and is, once again, first name on the teamsheet. He seems to enjoy the respect of his team mates and especially Ballard who, with O'Nien alongside, has developed into a very good defender. I'd say O'Nien has improved, at the same time, but some will maintain that he's 'shyte' no matter what. Perhaps he is, and I'm wrong, but I'm happy to admit his errors when it's justified ... ... some don't seem able to admit it when he's played well, now that's what I call bias.
Yes I noticed Onien having a go at Pembele, I think it was because Pembele pulled out of a tackleon halfway and their LW got away and put a cross in. Onien wasn't happy with him
We'd have obviously taken any striker's goal, from a fluke to a tap in, but what pleased me most is how deliberate and clinical Rusyn was. Flukes can't be repeated but I think we'll see more versions of that goal because practice makes perfect. Clarke has finally realised he has options other than doing it all himself ... ... which means teams doubling/trebling up on him are going to cause themselves problems. Fingers crossed that goal was just the start.
You could argue there's some validity in being strong headed when there's something to gain, like stubborn support in order to increase morale to help bring a player out of a slump, but the constant drone of negativity is a drain on the player and club.
I think Beale believed putting on Ba, to share in a victory, would help boost his confidence ... ... if that's the case it was well intentioned.
Just watched the highlights again this morning without the red and white specs on and I reckon that Rusyn 's goal was as good as Pritchard's. Yes Pritch's was a brilliantly individual goal but watching Rusyn 's movement when Clarke is driving into the box and then the quick burst of pace to get in front of the defender to guide the ball into the net was a great piece of technique and what we've been missing.
I think we'll see that goal repeatedly from Rusyn, he's got the guile and speed to get ahead of most defenders he just needs his teammates to be on his wavelength and fire low crosses in for him.
It's a goal that you can watch again because of all the components imo. The first thing I noticed was Dan Neil telling Patterson to get the ball to Clarke. Then Jobe realises he needs to distract the defender who's going to block the cross. It's an analysists dream if you're that way inclined ... ... fine margins from Clarke riding the first challenge to Rusyn being half an inch quicker to the cross.
Agreed. Might no make the pass or assist but he makes space and stretches game out a lot. Invaluable work.
Don't disagree with Pembele but it is noticeable that he really looks like a player who needs to get minutes in the tank so I think the coaches are trying to get him up to speed and ready for the second half of the season.
We've had few opportunities to give returning players time in games ... ... hopefully at 4-0, on Saturday, we can get players on for the last half an hour
I watched him back on the replay video. He looks a long way off in fitness terms and pushing him up the pitch when Seelt came on didnt look like it suited him. What I did see though is a player with a lot of confidence and belief. A couple of times he went to make the brave or adventerous play but his body couldnt do what his brain told it to do. I can be patient with him, particularly if we have Hume playing in that spot.
Dunno if it's been mentioned already on this thread, but how quiet were the Preston fans? I mean the atmosphere around the stadium was flat as a fart anyway but think they were the quietest set of fans I've ever (not) heard.
Preston gave nothing to it,but it isn't the first time we've had this. We big ourselves up into a club with huge crowds, especially for the division we happen to be in,but, very often the atmosphere is flat. No point in having 40k+ in the ground...although I sometimes have to question those numbers)....if most are only going to come alive after we score....and even then just for a short while. I've posted on this before....our home atmosphere,in stark contrast to away, needs a kick up the arse. I know someone who goes to all our away matches, and hardly any at home, citing the incredible buzz.
Was sat pretty much as close to Preston fans as possible and they did sing a few times to be fair and made a bit of noise but obvs was only a few hundred so not much,. Could hear the South stand occasionally but from where I was sat you can understand why away fans think the atmosphere in our end is crap. To be fair I’m glad I was sat in the South because I would’ve probably went to the pub instead of listening to 45 minutes of Newcastle songs when we aren’t even playing them
