The rumour mill has thrown another possible into the hat, Newcastles
right back Danny Simpson, who it appears will be on a free in JAN,any
of our 606rs know anything about him.Apart from keeping our present
batch, (with a couple of exceptions) our priority has to be 2 good defenders.

Yes the fans love him as a personality but are sometimes a bit critical of his play. He's seen as a bit risky and can put in the odd wildish challenge.

Having said that, the 2 or 3 times I've seen him, I thought he was pretty good.

He was thought highly of in his early days at Utd, and (from what I gather, feel free to correct me) has played his part in Newcastle's mean defence this season.

When I read this I was pleased. He seems to be the sort of defender that we are desperate for. His has an engine on him and likes to get forward to support the winger. He is quick and 24 years old, so has time to mature into in a fine player. Not entirely sure why he would want to come to us unless he fancies a move to London. Newcastle are flying at the moment so in terms of football they will be an attractive option, if it is money then we surely cannot offer him any more than Newcastle will. Unfortunately, I reckon this is a non-starter.

Don't forget that Newcastle seem to be on a belt-tightening spree over the last few months. I remember reading a few weeks back that Simpson was expecting to leave in the summer (or sooner) because the club was unlikely to offer him a new contract. I wouldn't be so sure that he would be out of our wage structure. I can't imagine he's on silly money, so it may be that a deal can be done. We'll have to wait and see.

Fair point Captain, it would be a solid signing if we could get him.

Do you have any idea of what happened to Rocky. I know he said he used to post on other sites under the same name. Just wondered if you may have seen him on your forum travels.

No. He posted on a discussion a few weeks back, saying that he'd been hospitalised and had just been allowed to come home, but I don't remember him posting after that. Funnily enough I was thinking just the other day that it's been quite a while since then. I hope he's all right - apart from anything else, I miss agreeing with him on virtually everything.

I don't really get around other forums, although I look in on a couple of blogs (one Fulham-specialist, one general football). This is the only place where I sound off about stuff. Well, this and the office. And at home. Okay, I should have said this is the only online place where I sound off about stuff.

Evening Captain, glad to hear that Rocks is at least still round, I have to admit that I was a little worried. His voice of reason is surely missed on here. Hopefully he will get some time to start posting again.

To cheer you up Tosh, the odd (negative) suggestion doesn't mean not being one hundred percent behind the club. Our record is almost exactly the same as this time last year so in a perverse way that's positive -

And so much to look forward to in Europe (which our style of play suits) and the cup. What chance of playing Chelsea in both finals?

With the boys having got their Christmas party out of the way, a bit of bonding and bizarre costumes(not to mention Kasami's £500) it must feel like the New Year already. Onwards and Upwards !!

I'm really conflicted at the moment. Usually I would be delighting in the struggles of the English Champions league clubs, but if City and Chelsea were to both finish third and drop down into the Europa League, joining Spurs and (hopefully) us and very possibly Birmingham and Stoke as well, we'll have almost no chance of being picked for the live TV games! Of the four English sides currently involved, we definitely rank behind Spurs as a TV draw, but are arguably more appealing to the TV schedulers than Stoke or Birmingham. If you add either Chelsea or Man City (or both), we're a long way back in the queue. Man Utd aren't safe yet either.

Completely agree, I don't want them taking attention away from us. I do wonder however if any of the champions league were to go a long way in the europa league after finishing 3rd in their groups then maybe they'll finally give the tournament the respect it deserves.

    1. What attention are we getting from the Europa, media-wise? None, just the odd game shown on telly and a couple of sentences on the BBC. If the Nunez/Dembele incident had happened to one of the top 6 clubs we'd never have heard the end of it.

    2. Champions League dropouts have been doing well in the Europa/UEFA for a long while, and it's still seen as a second-tier competition (which, in fairness, it is). I don't think it'll gain any more respect until it's stopped being used as a safety net for clubs who bomb out of the CL.

Spot on Bidley. The media will never give us decent coverage. Funnily enough last night I resurrected the Evening Standard's edition for the day after our Juventus triumph - the headline says it all, "Hodgson Heroes Are Brought Down To Earth". 'Blankety Blank' creative editor, or what?

Agree with you also about the money cows getting a second go at the trough.
