Perhaps, but I’m not sure that ever really works. It takes time to build a team, or at least the core of one. We’re doing that now, and I don’t see getting promoted then trying to cobble together a whole new squad as the answer. We need to build momentum imo, and to build it together - that’s the players, the manager, the coaching staff, the club itself and of course us the supporters, so when we hit the PL we arrive as a unit.
That's dangerously close to common sense, not regularly found in the world of football. Right though!!
I think we have to start giving him quite a bit of credit simply because of the consistency and how, when we start slowly or are under the cosh, his substitutions nearly all make a major impact. How many times, in the past, have we had managers who make changes and the subs have no positive impact and have even made us worse? Like many I get frustrated at the slow movement of the ball but quite often, IMO, that is because the midfielder receiving the ball just knocks it back to the CB instead of turning past a player into space to attack. Just one example is Stuart Armstrong. Against Coventry he was fairly ineffective and not taking responsibility and turning his marker, but against Blackburn he did and was unplayable at times. If we do get promoted this will be a key area for improvement and we will need players in who can do that, other than Stuart. A consistent Charly is capable of doing it.
We’re currently undefeated in 15 games, riding the wave. If that run of defeats had been spread evenly how would feel about our performance so far this season?
Currently our squad isn't that far from where it should be. We don't need to replace to much should we get into the Prem. Baz KWP - THB - Bednarek - Perraud Downes CM - Stuey RW - CF - Sulemana SUBS Liz, Bree, Stephens/ABK, Charles, Smallbone, Alcaraz, Edozie, Arma, Stewart Probably about 3/4 Signings away from being okay to battle relegation.
I agree. If Burnley, Sheffield and Luton stay up this year and we go up with say Rotherham and Plymouth I think we’ll be fine.
Been a while since we’ve seen that Gillingham fan crowing on here about how Martin isn’t a good coach…
I read that as 3/4 of a team mate! Been watching a bit of premier league on the tele recently and I've noticed a drift away from the obsession with possession to rapid, skillful footie. Not sure that our present squad could deal with it.
That’s alright. One miserable season in the Prem and then we can get back to the fun in the Champ again
Still can't quite figure out if the 5-0 win, six home victories in a row and 16-game unbeaten run are in spite of him...
In six months from where we were as a team, to how we are now, Martin has done a fantastic job. he pinpointed the togetherness and mood around the club as serious issues and he has rectified that. I wish the football was slightly more ruthless, but I’m hoping that is where we’re headed in terms of how the football evolves for the second half of the season. Today was a good sign step in that direction.
