At least Advertise has been respectable since midsummer. Still, a bit disappointing and the National Stud is not his home any more, so I believe.
He’s moved to Manton Park Stud, though I believe that was always the intention - they’ve been doing the place up ready to house the stallions owned by Martyn Meade.
In the end he hasn't done so badly after a poor start. All his runners seem to have been in the UK/Ire. Interesting that the leading FSS in France is City Light (by Siyouni).
I’ll do a final catch up on the year’s results shortly and then it’ll be time to start thinking about next year’s contenders!
Final Stats, though granted there may be a few more winners between now and 31st December! (previous position in brackets): 1. (=11) Study of Man - 9 winners from 26 runners (11 wins from 71 runs 15.5%) - 1 G2 winner, 1 G3 placed 9. (=11) Masar - 7 winners from 48 runners (9 wins from 117 runs 7.7%) 10. (12) Eqtidaar - 5 winners from 25 runners (7 wins from 84 runs 8.3%) 11. (13) Waldgeist - 4 winners from 50 runners (4 wins from 50 runs 8%) 12. (14) Le Brivido - 2 winners from 19 runners (2 wins from 63 runs 3.2%) 13. (=14) Crystal Ocean - 1 winner from 4 runners (1 win from 7 runs 14.3%) Still to have a runner: Flag of Honour Honourable mention to City Light who is 9th on the European sire list with 17 winners from 35 runners. I did not include him in my main list as he was not likely to have many runners in GB/IRE being based in France where he stands for €7,000. Ultimately he has had 2 runners in Britain, 1 of which is a winner.
Looking ahead to 2024, the main contenders in Britain and Ireland are likely to be: Number of reported foals in brackets (I'm taking this from the 2022 Return of Mares so more up to date figures will be available as the season starts in terms of how many each has in training) ARIZONA (54) CIRCUS MAXIMUS (43) EARTHLIGHT (86) FAR ABOVE (67) GHAIYYATH (89) KAMEKO (78) KING OF CHANGE (37) MOHAATHER (94) OLD PERSIAN (95) PINATUBO (91) RUMBLE INTHEJUNGLE (23) SANDS OF MALI (86) SERGEI PROKOFIEV (116) SHAMAN (86) WITHOUT PAROLE (46)
Pinatubo. Remember that one well. Unbeaten 2yo including a G2 and 2 G1s and odds on fav for the 2000 Gns (without a pre run and finished 3rd). 3 more runs at 3, all G1s. Beaten a length by Palace Pier in the St James's Palace Stakes. Beaten 1¾L by Persian King in the Prix du Moulin and in between won the Qatar Prix Jean Prat. Fav in 8 out of 10 starts, 4 of them odds on. Didn't quite come up to expectations at 3 but still pretty good. Top class horses on both sides of pedigree but difficult to gauge likely optimum racing distance. Pinatubo only raced at 7f and 8f
People now catching up on how well City Light did. Apparently he had 21 winners from 41 runners. In the UK he had 3 winners from 4 runners. He's a perfect stallion if you are looking for an outcross with no Northern Dancer in his first 4 generations. His nearest inbreeding is to Klairon 5 x 5 and Northern Dancer 5 x 5. Though carrying a FR suffix he was bred at the Jedburgh Stud in England. We'll have to see how well he does this year with his 3yos and new crop of 2yos.
Quite a feather in the cap of Blue Point to get a Guineas winner in his first crop. This gives breeders wider possibilities with their mares. It seems to mares with stamina he's perfectly capable of getting top class milers. Some sires with a sprinting record when bred to stamina laden mares get neither a fast horse nor one that stays 8f+. He also ticked the tough box in Ireland.
Darley must be thrilled with two of their young sires netting a Classic winner from their first crops, plus Cracksman getting an Arc winner from his first 3yos last year. A shame that Masar is looking like a disappointment so far, hopefully they will give him more time but I worry the writing is on the wall for him already.
