Found this image on Facebook and thought it worth sharing. Apparently a picture taken during the 1896 Scottish Cup Final between Hearts and Hibs in Edinburgh, it shows the strange field markings of the day - I'm wondering why on earth the goal area had two semi-circles instead of the rectangle it has these days? I never knew that the penalty area used to stretch the whole width of the pitch - nor that penalty kicks could be taken from any point along that line pointing to the ref's head in the photo. Nor that, judging by the pose of the guy third from the right, Billy the Kid played for Hearts.
Not to mention the goalkeeper wearing the same outfit as the rest of his team - identifiable only by his hat.
