Four games in ten days. Oof. This is the sort of situation when a bigger squad comes in handy. Also, use your subs, Russ. I'd say the only players who must play, are KWP and Downes, arguably Adarma. But they won't be able to play every minute. So if we ever find ourselves with a two-goal cushion with half an hour left, take them off. Re: The Manning situation. He'll have to play at some point unfortunately. Probably less risky in the home games which we will dominate more.
Gordon Watson's nickname was "Flash". I always thought it was because of the cartoon character but now I know about him playing alongside Shipperley it could have been for something else. When they said his tackle was ferocious I just assumed it was about his qualities as a footballer.
Flash was a super sub. He wasn’t great as a player but when he came on his energy always lifted the game and the fans. Mainly I think he ran around a lot. I liked him
He used to be constantly badgering and cajoling Shipperley who otherwise did not push himself very hard.
I always remember a game against Manchester United, when Cantona got up in Flash's face about something - screaming and shouting inches from him - Flash didn't react at all, other than to waft his hand in front of his nose as if Cantona had a hideous case of halitosis.
I managed to find the video, it starts at 3.23... We were absolutely flying that season under Chris Nicholl, scoring goals for fun with a front FOUR of Le Tiss, Rideout, Shearer and Rod Wallace. It's still one of my favourite Saints seasons and one of the best kits ever.
This run of 4 games in 10 days is going to be tough in terms of stamina but we are fortunate that of the 4 teams we play only Norwich are above the halfway mark in the league, at 10. Hopefully this will allow for enough player rotation without affecting results.
It's the day before matchday. It's windy, damp and grey. A flock of geese in V formation skimmed along the canal. Honking as they went on their way.
