Not sure whether Cheltenham's card is an effort to shift towards more handicaps and fewer graded races but it looks a little bit lopsided with 4 handicap chases, a handicap hurdle, a juvenile hurdle and the Grade 2 spud race. That Grade 2 does look a good renewal and if all 10 go to post it will be something of a rarity to have a double-figure field for a graded race this side of Christmas. Short-priced fav Shanagh Bob looks to be priced up on connections and price tag rather than what he did at Plumpton and I think the prize money can stay with the Bartlett family as Cadell can surely overturn Kelso form with Kerryhill on 7lbs better terms. The Triumph Hurdle Trial is actually that, being run on the new course over the exact distance of the Triumph. In the last 20 years Katchit and Defi du Seuil both took this en route to March glory and, even though Burdett Road doesn't run, An Bradan Feasa (the salmon of knowledge from Irish mythology) represents his form having finished 2nd to the current Triumph favourite last time. His main opponent today looks to be German flat winner Kourosh who bolted up on yard debut at Wetherby (although they pretty much walked the last furlong on the testing ground). In the feature December Gold Cup it is a refreshing change to see a proven Grade 1 performer trying to give weight away but is Fakir D'Oudairies just in there to give the same owner's So Scottish a lovely racing weight? Emmet Mullins is such a shrewd operator and this has no doubt been the plan since his encouraging run in the Festival Plate in March. His last run at Gowran was nothing more than a pipe opener, he will strip much fitter today and I expect him to hack up.
So impressive from Broadway Boy again there - what a tough novice he is. Twister won the Paddy Power Gold Cup with Imperial Commander off 139 many years ago on just his 4th chase and we all know what he went on to do. Broadway Boy could develop into a really top class staying chaser.
Last two were winners, both by a country mile. Hindsight tells me that first selection was certainly a poor choice. Was brought down by a faller, but doubt if it would have made any difference in it gaining a podium finish! C'est la vie!
Can’t agree with you there , Oddy. Threeunderthroughfive stays well but is very one paced. The potential winner fell so unluckily at the third last. Malina’s Girl was hacking and just landed steeply at that dreaded fence. It’s better than it used to be- when many brilliant horses came tumbling down there
