You probably won’t believe me, but I was one of them in the late 70,s on select coaches either the Coggsies, Billy Honour, Pop etc. Canny few more now though.
Must have been New Year’s Day 1980 I think when Frankie had a bus on for safc fans to get to Sunderland station to go to St James’s,started in Sherburn about 11oclock and no kidding about over two hours later after visiting Thornley,Wheatley Hill,Shotton,Peterlee,Hordon,Blackhall and god knows how many other places we finally reached Sunderland station about 2pm (with about 100 lads onboard) Got to say never saw a black and white till we arrived in Newcastle
The good old days I wouldn’t have thought the black and whites from round Peterlee would have got on that bus in those days. One of my red and white mates got select up to Newcastle around that time, and the bus dropped them off at the Magpie. He said it was like the Alamo. I know Frank (Ive had a good bit crack with him) and a lot of his old hands. If you’re from Peterlee, I’ll know you, probably not if your from Horden.
The flag display by the Spirit of 37 lads will be the last one. Doesn't make good reading otr. Such a shame
To be fair the bus was crammed like sardines when we pulled up to the last pick up,The Gamecock, and couldn’t believe how many people came out to get on
Counts for nowt in these games. Been all over the country with Wilbur, crackerjack and cracking lad. he’s calmed down a bit now like.
You should win but it’s the cup. You were going to smash us or some such. Now you should win. Day of the game you’ll be bricking it and may be some of your poor losers will lose their heads or bottle it. Then you’ll be in a game. And that’s before you realise that we may have a Monty, Dave Watson or a Tueart in the making in the team.
We may have some who will bottle it, freeze or whatever. Hopefully you’ll have more. Judging by the players you’ve quoted, you’re as old as me. I I’ll raise you a Macdonald, Tony Green and Jimmy Smith.
