So this ridiculous government has now reached the point where it has bet the farm on a policy that will never be implemented, and even if it was would have a vanishingly small effect on the problem it's supposed to solve. The Tory party is on the verge of tearing itself apart because the Rwandan government has told Sunak that if he was to do what the furthest right elements of his party want him to do, they would pull out of the deal that Sunak has staked his leadership on - this being because Rwanda is not prepared to flout International law in the way that Britain seems willing to do. What utter madness.

Rwanda are supporting Sunak's initiative, and it helps it if they demonstrate how important human rights are. It's virtue signalling at an international level.

I haven't a clue whether teh Rwanda deal will work. But let me say that Labour's policy to say nothing about immigration will not go down well at a GE. And it won't be enough to say they'll chase organised crime, because it's already being done and is incredibly difficult. Not only because these criminals operate out of lawless countries, but because every time one gang is rounded up, another steps in to replace it due to it being so lucrative.

Immigration and illegal immigration will be a major issue for both parties for many years to come

It's bewildering that Sunak should go all in on a policy that, as Cummings let slip the other day, was only ever meant to be a diversion. It could never have any meaningful impact. Since Johnson purged the government of anyone with an ounce of reason, it's the bonkers far right that dictates Tory policy.

It would help a great deal if either of the main parties would admit that, with a low indigenous birth rate and an aging population, a fairly high level of immigration is a necessity for the UK economy. Free movement within the EU was beneficial in this regard, with many entering on a temporary basis only.

I wouldn't listen to Cummings. Sunak is effectively staking his premiership on Rwanda. We'll see.

As to the admission in your second paragraph, the Liberal Democrats are already doing that. Their polling barely reaches double figures.

It certainly seems like he's staking it on Rwanda. Big mistake in my opinion, people are more concerned with living standards, cost of living and keeping a roof over their heads than they are about Rwanda.

This is quite an interesting YouGov tracker graph, that show's that at present, you're right, Bob . Economy first, NHS second and Immigration third, although Immigration is the only one of the three to be rising...

    https://yougov.co.uk/topics/society/trackers/the-most-important-issues-facing-the-country

But that reflects all voters, whereas Sunak is focused on possible Tory voters who are moving right to Reform. On the other side of Reform, some Tory votes in the South are leaking to the Lib Dems.

Who'd be a prime minister, eh? The best of British luck to Sir Keir if he converts the opinion polls to GE votes

The US FINALLY publicly criticising Israel for its treatment of innocent civilians in Gaza. Thousands of innocent men, women and children butchered needlessly and indiscriminately. It’s way way way beyond war crimes now.

And before I’m criticised for the above by the holy joes on here, I am not condoning for one second what Hamas did. They are a terrorist organisation that deserves to be wiped off the face of the earth FOREVER. There are always innocent casualties in any war but Israel has shown no duty of care to those who needed it most. Many in the world will never forgive them for this.

You could say the same about the Allied bombing of Nazi Germany in 1944/45, Nuts. And the Nazis didn't shelter their military machinery around civilians, hospitals and schools.

So the amount spaffed on the barmy Rwanda scheme has grown to £240m with another £50m to come, and not a single asylum seeker sent there. If this ridiculous government had spent this money on additional staff to process asylum claims instead, they could have cleared the 175,000 backlog twice over and saved the £3bn per annum currently being paid out for hotel accommodation.

Yeah but. Where are the sexy headlines in quietly getting on with it instead of taking part in the 'who can piss the furthest and most accurately into a pot' games with Liz T and Suella B? He's already lost out in the testicle size count.

Are there really 175000 asylum seekers or are most just illegal economic migrants that couldn't speak French or German

We’d know if we processed them rather than wanting the backlog to rise to get the usual suspects in a lather over immigration rather than the Tories ****ing the country off for their own gain.
