Peeps, Gervinho has squandered some chances recently, ok, it happens. what I am not happy about is the way he tried to put the ball in the back of the net for Arsenal's first goal - the ball came across to him, he let the ball run through his legs and tried to back heel it toward goal - missing the ball completely. Luckily for us Robin Van Persie was behind him to sweep the ball into the goal. Did anyone else notice this? WTF was he playing at ? 2 week's wage fine should be dished out immediately.
Yes I did and laughed - only 'cos I immediately saw RVP net it. Geronimo has missed far too many. He seems to cause havoc in defences and then squanders. He must learn to look for assists - right now greedy and bloody wasteful.
Yes, yes I did and was bitching about it to the only other Gooner in my office just now! We're fooking 1 down and you've already wasted 2 glorious chances. Don't be a prick and try and be fancy. RVP, outstanding player that he is didn't feel the need to be a bell end. He just gratefully accepted Theo's pass (which was awesome) and tapped it in. Which is what swellhead should have done. By all means be fancy when we're 3 up and there are 10 minutes to go but this is a results business.
Berg makes a good point, Gerv does cause havoc in defences, and maybe it's this that has created (or contributed to creating) the openings for RVP ? Gerv was pulling Chelsea all over the place at the Bridge the other week, and when alls said and done it'll always be 11 against 11 so gaps appear, just maybe Gervs presence and style of play is assisting RVP.....
I agree that he causes havoc and I am happy to have him in the team. But he took the piss with that back heel. Mancini took Balloteli off in that pre season game for taking the piss and that was a friendly !!!
Hey he can still play the same way if he wants to, I'd just rather he buries the 'four feet away from goal' chances when presented with them! As a player I admire his energy levels and it's nice to see someone attacking defenders as it sh*ts them right up. Obviously it won't always work (and frequently hasn't in his case) but it's refreshing to see. The promising thing is that he's only just joined a new league, a new team and one which was hastily thrown together. I doubt any can deny his positive impact so I have high hopes that once a bit more adapting has been done he'll be a superb player for us.
Weren't we b*tching at the start of the season that we needed a selfish player?! Just playing devil's advocate here...
Hey - don't get me wrong - he's taken over from poor old Arse-shaving - who has lost it. When he takes the ball into their defence he starts chaos - I want him in the team. He just has to learn to deliver that coup-de-grace -the pass that kills.
Seriously, that attempted flick got me really wound up.... especially given the importance of that goal. My son plays as a striker for the local under14 side and would have given him a hairdryer treatment if he had attempted something like that, with his side 1-nil down.... I just wonder, whether that was the only way he could go take the shot.... would have to watch it again, as I refuse to believe he was showboating.....
it's a bit different between trying to score on the line with abit of a fancy finish, and a twat of a player trying to score a penalty with a back heel And from what i remember wasn't the ball a touch behind Gervinho/the keeper right infront of him? so knocking it straight in would of been more difficult, an flicking behind him slightly the better option?
Oooooh Mr Wright arguing for the defence hehehehhee another Devil's Advocate A back heel can never be a better option than striking it properly, even striking it properly with the inside of your foot angled to miss the keeper is a more secure way of converting a cross coming at you parallel with the goal.
he's just what everyone was calling out for in summer - a direct player. he gets the ball down, runs at defenses, and scares people. if you get the ball, and pass, then you're not running at the defense, you're not scaring anyone, and you're not a direct player. you can't have it both ways.
And anyway, what are people moaning about here? Gervinho probably didn't know RVP was behind him, would've had his eyes on the ball, and Walcott's pass was played behind him so the backheel flick was the only chance he had of scoring; in that situation, you've got a cross coming in and you believe you're the only one on the end of it, it was a great piece of thinking to attempt that rather than just sqaunder it. You seem to be moaning because "omg, why didn't he just leave it for RVP" ... I doubt he knew he was there. If RVP hadn't been there to score, you would be praising Gervinho for attempting a clever move to at least try and get a goal out of a cross that was played behind him.
