Once the ref is called over they give it so I assume its an instruction. If you upstream the source of the error is VAR for calling over the ref. The ref is also to blame though for not saying sorry but I think you're wrong and we can discuss this later.
We can blame all and sundry but it makes no difference now, the ref, for me is to blame, he's been over and watched it back, clearly seen the deflection, lack of movement from Tino's arm towards the ball, the proximity and speed at which it happened etc. - there are so many mitigating factors that there is no way on earth you can "rectify" that decision as it is not clear and obvious mistake - VAR needs a massive overhaul as it's not going anywhere now. Clear definition of the rules and implementation of what VAR is used for - because currently I wouldn't say its clear and obvious mistakes at present, consistent rules across all competitions, and dialogue to be broadcast for the watching public to hear what is being discussed. Also think managers should be allowed to "challenge" decisions e.g. Skrinar handball yesterday was a clear and obvious miss by the officials... These are all in force in other sports and there is no way it wouldn't improve the decision making process.
No they're not they're ****ing awful. Before Sunday they'd only won league games this season by a single goal margin, and a lot of those were very late winners. Even against Everton they were dire for long swathes of the match. Regardless of the injuries we have a squad on fire, they're a total rabble.
If you watch it again, the ref kind of shrugs his shoulders as if he doesn't think it's a pen, then more discussion and then he gives it
It's all overshadowed two other issues: 1) Where the **** did 8 minutes come from? 2) If Tino's is a pen, why isn't Miley's? It just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I can't believe it's corruption, not really, because Gordon's challenge was almost certainly a pen!!! It's the fact ie makes absolutely no sense! Anyways, it's all done and dusted, club will get a "we made a mistake" and may be able to sue UEFA for lost monies depending on the outcome. Fact is we had a bench of kids with no experience, couldn't run/pass for about half an hour and yet the aggregate over two games vs PSG is 5-2 and they've never beaten us in the UCL. I'm past it now - forget the manner, we're the latest in a long line to get shafted (ManU have had it twice already in the UCL, not mentioning all the PL controversy), and look at 4-1 and 1-1. Great results for our (more or less) maiden voyage. Eddie's also been absolutely magnificent in his conduct, as was Isak. Huge fair play to the pair of them and the team for grinding that out. I don't think any scenario is particularly bad, either. Total exit - well, we made our mark, got money, and will be better for it. Immensely helps our chance to get 5th or better. EL qualifcation - good chance we pick up some more money, commercial interest and get more exposure and possibly a nice run. UCL qualificatoin - absolutely bring it on, though Atl Madrid will easily do us!! We just need another 4-5 players, which we all knew anyway. Players watching that team play, seeing the crowd at home and some of our huge results (VIlla, Chelsea, the League Cup run again) will be keen to join in.
Exactly mate VAR calls refs over and the ref is told to give it. If they didn't call him over it wouldn't have happened, so there is the source of the error.
They're not though. 5 teams have beaten them. They've just had a load of lucky narrow one goal victories against the likes of Sheff Utd, Fulham and Luton.
Good points and maybe it was trying to even up the Gordon penalty shout which I thought could have been given, would have been soft but wouldn't hurt as much as Tino's. In terms of players yeah we need a few more of top quality but if we had a few (2/3) of Barnes, Wilson, Botman, Burn, Willock, Target, Longstaff, Tonali to come on and freshen things up think we win that comfortably. Most frustrating part about last night was the last 20 mins we just sat in and had no out ball. Not sure we carried the ball into their half for the last 15 mins and the last 10 I'm not sure we had possession out of our defensive third and by the end weren't even trying to get out - more of a training exercise to defend the goal and hoof it away but the 11 on the pitch were spent! Do think, even though we had limited options on the bench, we could have swapped out Goron/Almiron for Hall and even possibly Isak for one of the young lads just to add some energy into the team in extra time and try and kill some time but understand why Howe didn't in fairness.
Same on the last point. I was wanting Dummett on for Isak, back five, Gordon up top then bring on Hall for Almiron and swap him and Livramento four across the middle.5-4-1 with a bit of freshness and we’d have won, in my opinion.
We'd have won anyway mate. I don't want to be like arsenal fans let's see what happens and take the pluses.
I still think we’re in a ridiculously strong position given the group. Dortmund at home, granted they’ve qualified but they’re at home and have top of the group to play for, a draw would do them perfectly. Regardless of if we won in Paris we NEED to beat Milan. Dembele is suspended for PSG aswell. The only thing that’s changed from us winning last night to drawing is that we need a favour from Dortmund, we have to handle our own business regardless.
