Terry Venables passed away aged 80. Sad news . Will always remember Euro 96. Definitely a real football man and character. RIP.
Personally I'll always remember him for his pathetic excuses for two heavy defeats at Watford in the space of a month back in the early 80s when he managed QPR - "the uphill slope at Vicarage Rd" and "the ball was never on the ground long enough". I don't remember him ever getting the better of a GT-managed Watford side. His tactics, which were always unsuccessful, were boring in the extreme - sideways passing, backwards passing, crowding the midfield or packing the defence (like a lot of managers these days I suppose) - Glenn Roeder, who played for QPR at the time, later admitted that he and his team-mates used to dread playing at Watford. I was surprised to later learn that he got the England job really.
I remember him as much for his playing days as his managerial career. He was very good, and it was a surprise that he didn't play for England more often. He seemed to have much success at whatever he turned his hand to, although you might question his singing. Football really needs characters to bring reality to the game, and he certainly was one. RIP
Ha didn’t know that but then guess he was like the rest who didn’t like our way of playing and couldn’t cope . I do remember he liked to play football his way though.
His "offside trap" was the thing for me. And I definitely remember his whinging at Watford. However Euro 96 was fun.
