Nick Barmby was fantastic in his interview with Burnsy. He didn't hesitate in his answers. He can think on his feet and he has no fear of getting something wrong. He's obviously thought a lot about what is important to a football club. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15805891.stm?
I think the interview highlighted the massive difference between Nick Barmby and Nigel Pearson. Apart from the defensive ramblings of NP and the informative NB style, It was the fact that Nick went out of his way to mention the fans. Nigel Pearson never did to my recollection, in fact he was sneary when anyone mentioned them. He must have been really hurt by fans at some point in his carreer, or maybe it just showed us a little of the inner man and why in the end he just didn't want to be here. Either way it was a pretty shortsighted way to go about business.
I think NP was a great manager for us, but this is one thing i agree with. What did he think would happen if he never acknowledged us or said anything good about us. What would happen if Leicester never came in for him....
One thing that strikes me about Nick is his modesty. Apparantly when the fans asked him to give them a wave yesterday he rather sheepishly raised arm to acknowledge them. That for me shows that he understands that he's still learning, not acting like a big time charlie now he's the manager and keeping focused on getting results and the best out of the team. He conducted himself very well in the interviews and is definetly someone who can relate to the supporters.
Obviously you don't think about your football. Your formula is "win matches = good", "draw matches = not so good" and "lose matches = bad". Seeing as Nick Barmby has only had one match as Hull City manager you don't have the ability and interest to think about whether he could be a good manager. I think the interview is encouraging. You are at liberty to not think about it and use your formula in the future when you look back.
i couldn't give a **** if he talks to radio or not.that int important.ffs get in touch with blunderside, you might get a fans forum now np has gone.on the pitch important.interviews not.
how the **** does barmby talking to his mate burnsy equate to him making a good manager? fully behind nicky but come on...
Christ, was only saying! I've said before when Pearson was here that the media side of things didn't bother me too much as long as we were getting results. Not to say I didn't think he was rude and off hand at times. Of course what happens on the pitch is more important, but there seems to have being a distance created between the manager and the supporters from when NP was here and I think people enjoy having someone who can relate to them a bit more.
there was no distance created at all.grow up. mind you i forget i'm on the primary school forum here.
It's all about opinions though isn't it, why should I be told to grow up by you because I have a different view on things? You're the one who acts like the Primary school child with all the unnecessary insults you throw about on here
Whether NB is more media friendly or not, what is refreshing is what he says and how he says it. Whether you like it or not, the media is a big part of the football business, and the face of the club which is the manager can also influence potential income to the club, so to say it is not important is way off the mark.
Interviews are important, because it's part of the job. Only SAF can get away with pissing off parts of the media. For other managers it is important to have a dialogue with the media, a bad relationship with them puts pressure on him and his team, as we have seen time and time again. When the odd game goes wrong they get crucified as the media get their own back. People are only saying that Nick has made the right start, that's all ffs. Use the thow away lines such as "It's what happens on the pitch etc" all you like, no-one disagrees with that, just put it in context.
One thing I've noticed about Nicky is he's a bit dour himself. After Pearson though he's a breath of fresh air. I don't think he's the media monkey that people seem to be suggesting here.
Barmby has only had one match as manager and therefore relatively inexperienced. He will inevitably learn how to handle the different media pressure that comes with being a manager
I know it's not the point of the thread and this is no criticism of Nick, but it's easy to give good interview when you've just won 0-2 away and your one big decision paid off handsomly. Lets see what happens when he makes a decision the fans don't like and he's asked to justify it.
I think Nick gives us the best of both worlds. We have someone who appears more willing and comfortable talking to the media, yet at the same time he doesn't strike me as a performing seal a la Brown where he can't keep out of the media spotlight.
