Interesting we had nearly 745,000 net migration last year. That Brexit thing did a great job of giving us control of our borders. I am not anti-immigration, but surely that is too many too fast? How do public services cope with usage going up like this?
There were some exceptional circumstances, Ukraine and Hong Kong non-EU students and other pressures, numbers are expected to drop over time. No doubt the current government will claim it was because of their policies , as with inflation rises are due to external forces falls due the government. I couldn't find the concise explanation, this has some interesting info. https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac....igures-not-a-reliable-guide-to-future-trends/
I was just going to post about the election, having read about it in the paper, and watching this short video on LBC, in which the woman states that the two most likely parties to be asked to form a coalition, with Wilders, have said no.
I've just read that. It is interesting as pre-Brexit, the levels of 300,000 per year net migration were one of the reasons people voted to leave the EU. Now, post Brexit, we have more than double that. In a country that struggles to improve services and has desperate issues with housing, I do see these levels are worrying. If more people are coming, we need to spend a lot of money to make a country we can all enjoy living in. Even when these levels drop again (if they do), we will be looking at 300,000 net migration per year - with about 1.5 million extra in those years where the migration spiked. Those are crazy figures!
20-25% tends to be the absolute ceiling of this kind of view. Despite what people claim and talk of “silent majority”. Same as how Suella had a 16% approval rate but there were people out there who claimed she spoke for the majority of the population. Often using mental gymnastics and clever semantics - that politics professor who is trying to be a U.K. Jordan Peterson. Matt Goodwin I think it is
I wanted to see if he would openly admit it though. Carl Benjamin (formerly Sargon of Akkad, UKIP candidate and host of right leaning podcast/YouTube channel) appears to be doing exactly the same - solely watching I’m a Celeb for Farage
Is it updated that they have still said “no”? Because the reporting this morning was that they said no when asked pre election but that he did “so well” that they might reconsider (either because they have to or want to). But if they’ve still said no then that is an update from what I saw
Just a thought: as this figure is net migration, maybe it's gone up post Brexit (at least partially) because of the far fewer opportunities for Brits to emigrate to work in the EU. It'd be interesting to see the figures split between ins and outs, if anyone knows where to look. But yes, it's a good question about public services, given how under-resourced they are in the first place
Even if that were true that isn’t something the current government can highlight - because it is completely their fault and self inflicted. Unlike the high incoming figure which is only largely their fault (even if only indirectly). Also they can potentially do something about the incomings. They can’t (and likely don’t want to) do much to increase the outgoings
Rather interesting to read that researchers at Bath University have demonstrated that swathes of people with under-developed cognitive abilities voted for Brexit.
Multiple children stabbed in the centre of Dublin in a terror attack. I pray the victims all pull through. Sickening.
I don't know what you insinuate or mean by "terror attack". This from the press conference. "Supt Geraghty says that although it is early in the investigation, gardaí are confident that there is "no terror-related activity" and that it would appear to be a "stand alone attack". "He says his officers need to establish the reasons behind the attack."
Yes, I am sure the perpetrator was a White British person that was born here, just like every other terror attack. Oh wait.
This says more about the bias of surveys in the education system than anything else. One of the smartest people I know with a degree in politics voted for Brexit; and he knew more about it than anyone
If it was a white British person born here stabbing people in Dublin then it probably would be considered a terror attack. Ireland not being part of Britain and all. But that’s just me being pedantic I suppose as that clearly isn’t what you meant
Unlikely, the attack took place in Dublin and as the press conference not terror related. Difficult facts to assimilate for someone of limited intellect such as yourself.
