Jeremy Hunt’s Autumn Statement was a complete waste of time, as expected, with a few small tweaks to taxes to give the impression of taxes cuts whilst failing to address the real problems. It would have been no better had Rachel Reeves been giving her Statement as she has no plan that she dares to mention when questioned. Does anyone remember Hunt mentioning any measures to cut the size of the State? That huge waste of taxpayers’ money, the civil servants that cannot even be bothered to show up to the office these days, needs to be culled. The numbers have ballooned in recent years, especially as Boris failed to carry out his stated reduction of the head count and instead took on more – the civil service head count up 69,000 since 2019. The public sector is a zero productivity environment. The national debt as a percentage of GDP has now gone over 100 per cent. There are only two ways to reduce it: higher taxes or reduced spending. Labour will definitely resort to the former as they destroy the economy and it seems the only difference with the Conservatives is that they will do neither so we will float down into the economic abyss on a parachute.
In the world of Proportional Representation (PR) it is unlikely that the far Right are going to form any sort of workable coalition in the Netherlands. That is the great thing about PR – it leads to a vacuum in power as nobody can ever get anything radical done. Look at Italy – the average lifetime of an Italian government since WWII is just over a year and the country is an economic disaster thanks to Euro membership.
