I've still got my Callaway x16's tucked away in the garage with my Ping G2 driver. Hoping to get back out for a casual round or two next year.

Not too sure if that helps you though! <laugh>

True, but it's much better in the sunshine without needing waterproofs and hats. It's a nice social game as well to catch up on a bit crack with the lads as well.

Provided we aren't all zig zagging across the fairway and only meet up on the greens <laugh>

Ha. My youngest lad has taken it up this year. He is a boxer as well and is a touch short tempered. Not a good mix. Thankfully we say goodbye on the tee and hello on the green (if he ever gets there <laugh>) and I miss his club throwing, foul mouthed rants.

It's a bloody hard sport when you are first starting out like. Definitely worth getting a few lessons to get the basics right. But when you catch one sweet and it flies down the middle of the fairway it feels fantastic.

Like Gary Player said, one shot is all it takes to bring you back next time.

Once you hit your first good, clean strike, you want to do it again!

It's a great feeling, you hit it so sweet that you can't actually feel any contact with the ball. It just flies nice and straight down the fairway and we march after it like Seve Ballesteros.

Next shot is a hook and it flies about 3 fairways away <laugh>

I still have a set of ping zings and was told never to change them by my old pro. They were offset and chunky though so I did change…. Several times

titleist, taylor made, cobra…. I haven’t found anything better than a forged Mizuno though.

Blades are like butter, if you can hit ‘em. Or equally good cavity/muscle back options, esp if you’re out in these winter months.
I have a mix of mp4, pro223 and pro225 irons - there are many others.
    - getting the right shaft also vital
I stick to ping for my driver/hybrid

    Happy hunting!

I have a set of Taylormade SIM 2 irons in the UK for whenever I come home...love them, so forgiving. In Abu Dhabi I have a set of PXG 0311XP irons, without doubt the best clubs i've had in nearly 50 years playing the game, highly recommended.

One of my early sets were ping eye 2s. I have a set of ping i3s I have never got rid of because they always felt great.

Mizunos I will try out, thanks. Many moons ago I had a mizuno driver - way before technology mattered.

Well, off to collect my new irons tomorrow. Then straight on the course. Like a kid at Christmas.

Went for the Wilson D9 forged in the end. Absolutely stunning feel, and they seemed quite long. They look beautiful as well, just old school classic. I tried a fair few and as someone suggested Mizunos got close, but were nearly double the price. Overall the Wilsons were more than a match and the way they sit behind the ball is a thing to behold.

Spoke to my local pro and he said Wilson are making real waves with their irons at the minute. Absolute bargain prices too compared to Ping, Taylor Made etc. He gave me a couple of their staff wedges to hit on the trackman and they felt amazing too. Cant afford wedges as well mind, only bought a new set 18 months ago and my good lady would have my guts for garters. In a year of two though, they will get the trial.

Anyone looking at a change, try the Wilsons is my advice.

My son is 15 and currently having lessons at The driving range on Newcastle Road. In the summer, April/May even, we'll look at trying a local course. Any recommendations for a beginner?

I’m a bit out of touch with this now but Wallsend (I know) used to be canny for absolute beginners to go for a pay as you play round. Didn’t have to be a member and the course was decent enough to get a feel for playing without the proper golfers getting impatient and upset at their course getting ruined
Maybe worth checking out unless there’s something nearer anyone knows about.
