It's a real shame the reasons and purpose of this thread weren't 'impeccably observed' today.Someone took the trouble to set this up this morning out of respect and they really did deserve better than this. It's got to the stage that absolutely every thread on HullNot606 ends in pointless division, argument and name calling...F.F.S is nothing sacred anymore?
If I was driving I would park well before 11 Today I saw a car driving across Westminster Bridge during the two minutes silence.
Must say, having just got in, that the silence was impeccably observed. Best I’ve heard at City I think. I assume concourse staff had been told to not rattle their cooking implements, because I certainly never heard them and heard no noise at all from North concourse. If I’m being really picky it would have been nice for people to remain silent for Reveille and the Kohima Epitaph. The epitaph is optional for silences, but as the club had it on the screen, and there was clearly something going on in the centre circle, I assume it was being spoken. Small moan only though because the club didn’t announce it in the running order so fans couldn’t be expected to observe it, so massive well done to a packed crowd I think. Respect to anyone involved in Remembrance Services tomorrow (EDIT - today actually)
Went down today to watch granddaughter marching with school cadet force to the cenotaph. Felt proud seeing her and the others looking so smart.
as our thoughts are with the fallen, I thought I would highlight just how the two world wars affected my family one of my grandad's was a stretcher bearer at Passchendaele - the other was shot and run through with a bayonet at Gallipoli, he survived - my father fought in North Africa, my wife's uncle was captured and spent the war in a German prison camp having to kill rats for food, her mother worked at the Avro factory near Leeds making planes, her father worked on the docks in the south coast, a bomb killed all his friends and blew out one of his ear drums and that was him out of action and there are more that have faded in the mists of time I know each one of us has similar stories and many that are probably long forgotten - but we should never forget the sacrifice that so many people made to fight for the freedoms that we all enjoy today - Lest we forget
Was in a supermarket today, the store announced there would be a 2 minute silence at 11am. It started on time, half the people stood still and stayed quiet, the rest stopped talking but carried on shopping. One shopper actually answered a phone call, most of the store heard the conversation which didn't include the words 'can't talk now'...
I hold Poppy Day very close to my heart. It’s seems such a simple idea. Paper poppy to wear and 2 minutes silence to remember sacrifice and hard hard times we can not imagine. As I get older I see the change In mind in how newer generations see this and try to understand and at times can when I think of the time that’s gone by. I can not understand the political fighting over it all and where it has come from as it was not there once upon a time. Maybe it’s social mouth pieces on Social media I don’t know. I will always buy a poppy and remember how much we have failed to learn from the sacrifices in our history. I raise a glass to the greatest generation. Doffs hat..
My dad didnt say much about his second world war but he seemed to be in all the main places Dunkirk, North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Normandy, Burma One incident he did tell me about was when he got captured by the Germans in North Africa along with a group of his mates The German's werent very good at keeping guard and they escaped by sneaking away during the night Only one of his brothers died during the war (he had 11 siblings). He ate a dozen ostrich eggs in Egypt and it killed him.
Interesting you should say that. My maternal Grandfather and his 2 elder Brothers fought in WW1(Ypres area).Came from a family of 8(3 Brothers,5 Sisters).Grandad was the only who came back home to Driffield(2 brothers killed in action). He himself was injured, back full of shrapnel and spoke very little of the horrors. His Fathers youngest brother(his uncle) also died.... Through eating contaminated Corned Beef!! I stood today at Glasgow George Square Cenotaph..It was freezing,my feet were so cold they were killing me,I went for a whisky or 2 after it,they never had that luxury. How must they have felt wading around in the mud and rats in trenches? Different Breed.....
Above my Children’s Great Grandfather. Just gives an idea of how close many were to never been born. This was the 2nd time he had to parachute out of a destroyed aircraft. On another occasion he missed a raid as a new member had joined the crew. The plane was shot down with no survivors.
Conversely I was in Anlaby M&S. They shut both the normal and self-service tills at about 10:57, announced / issued a reminder that they would be having 2 minutes silence at 11 and to be fair to all the staff and the fair few customers they had it was then impeccably observed. No fuss, barring maybe the guy manning the self-serve who looked to be panicking in case people hassled him when he was turning them all off, but everyone just got on with it with no complaints and he looked so relieved at 11:02. Really good to see.
