It’s not her duty to tell the police how to operate, they are bound by legislation set down by parliament, not by the whims of one individual. By telling them how to police she is overstepping her authority
The Police have been so captured by ideology that they need a reminder how to actually do their job Arrest wrong doers and be impartial, treating everyone the same Which they’ve failed to do
You’re entitled to your opinion, others are equally entitled to theirs, either way as Home Secretary it’s not her position to interfere with operational policing decisions. If she doesn’t like it she should step down. She did it to make a point, & to undermine the PM. She is jockeying to be leader of the Tory party. That’s not what serious politicians do, as Home Secretary she should be sticking to her remit, not using her position as a means of promoting her own political aims. Edit Shortly there may be a Labour Home Secretary would you really like her/him to interfere in the same way, bearing in mind their views may well be completely different to yours. That’s why politicians shouldn’t attempt to interfere with operational policing decisions it’s not a party issue. The rules are set down by parliament as a whole and the police are obliged to follow the rules of the whole house not act on the direction of any one politician.
Yes questioning the police can be part of the home secretary's role. A remit of the the home secretary is law and order. In September Braverman ordered an enquiry into political activism in the police force. Her recent comments follow the same concerns e.g. Suella Braverman gave the police a public rebuke over the recording of non hate crime incidents. The Police were ignoring their own guidelines. This has led to a new code being created - Police will prioritise freedom of speech under new hate incident guidance - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
i have to agree with you I have yet to meet anyone that wants her gone and everyone I have spoken say the same thing " she says it as it is and no other politician has the balls to" Ashton is on his own with this one I would believe? the simple thing was for the Police to say "sorry no march" do it any day after 12th or on or before the 10th. One thing that has changed rapidly since her comments is the pulling in of over 2000 police officers from all over the country to police what 1 square mile of LONDON! I am 100 % for peaceful well organised march's but this one is wrong time wrong place non of the other march's have had any trouble and it has been 000's ...we will see what happens tomorrow!
I would suggest you take adeep breth and count to 10 ..maybe 20 then take a read of what the home secretaries job is! you might be surprised! in fact with the above statement you will be! ps dont forget to pick your compo !
The met/ london police have a seriously bad record of failures right across the board of all things they are supposed to police fairly. imagine the cost of this one day operation, of over 2000 police being pulled in from other duties or from days off .. so overtime rate for all the time they are away from their base a minimum of £400 for 1 day plus hotel and food say £500 x 2000 thats just a £1m for these then the locals on the areas outside say another half a million plus plus extra control staff another £200k plus vehicle fuel and ancillaries another £50k not much change from £2,000,000 and thats for a peaceful 1 just hope it doesnt become unpeaceful then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My own take on it is that she was speaking on behalf of a sizeable, but silent, section (maybe even majority) of the British people who simply want Policing to go back to basics and do the job they are paid to do. Too many senior Police officers seem incapable of grasping the fact that doing nothing, when laws are blatantly being broken, totally pisses off Joe Public! This is not just marches, or the pulling down of Colston’s statue, but obviously extends to what used to be called low level crime (shoplifting for one) which often blights peoples lives and can lead to bigger things.
note Clifton stated her job brief. imagine she didnt say anything police at that point said yes go ahead with the march ... they have the usual presence a few hundred officers [ which had been the plan! ] but it all kicks off, the cenotaph gets damaged loads of arrests police hurt usual rent a mob have there usual day out loads damage etc etc ... next day papers come up with Police failure .. why didnt the home sec see this coming etc etc etc ................................................................................
Yes the home secretary can publicly comment on policing decisions, and she has previously. The home secretary has questioned and been publicly critical as to how the police were recording non hate crime incidents. There was an identarian nature to this policing where people were being investigated for beliefs regarding sex and jokes regarding gender. That can be put into perspective in regards to Braverman's recent remarks. People get investigated by the police for telling jokes. Call Palestinian flags crap on social media - Man arrested after 'racist' video 'slams Palestinian flags put up in UK street' | UK | News | Express.co.uk People are openly glorifying the murder of Jews, glorifying racist terrorists and calling for Jihad and the police?
Police have the power to say you can have a static demo somewhere. In Bristol they used an area by the Docks at Redcliffe. But no thats reserved for different types.
It seems the British Legion themselves are in favour of the peaceful protests https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/british-legion-palestine-protest-row-b2445116.html[/QUOTE]
How did the Home Secretary's words in the Times interfere with operational policing? The Home Secretary can alter policing. Here is the Home Secretary and the home office altering policing last month Possession of nitrous oxide is now illegal - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
Sorry Ashton .. in what you you have just posted then maybe Rishi shouldnt interfere with SB doing her job?? They are difficult to find but extra long handled spades are out there!
the answer is simple . it has caused the the met + 2000 others to safeguard the sanctity of the weekend/ day ...Ashton is just like most of us .. we wouldnt be here if the war had not happened and that goes back to atrocious WW1 WHERE SOLDIERS were treated like modern day Russian war fare ............... meat and cannon fodder! my great and great great grandfathers [ line of parents ] were thrust together by the result of wars! My family tree shows 3 wars ww2 [navy ]/ ww1 [army ] / Crimea [navy ] were responsible for my hereditary ancestory! 11 11 11th is a solemn day of reflection
He doesn’t need to interfere with SB , just sack her, she has caused division with her comments. Interesting the British Legion are in favour of peaceful protests today, yet you are still not willing to admit they should be able to be held.
I HAVE STATED i AM NOT AGAINST PEACEFUL PROTESTS ... there is a fine line between a peaceful protest and a peaceful March. Really strange that about the BL a few interviews with live people on various media channels have not backed that up ... maybe its because the rank and file though, the people that buy the poppies/sell the poppies not just "name in print" that may or may not have said exactly what gets printed! A friend with me at present, just said "I bet your mate would have a different response if she was anything but Tory! " ............ mind you he is a gas supporter! ................ but also goes to city match's with his grand kids ..... and he says votes labour!
I wouldn’t have a different response if she was anything but a Tory. Read back through my posts. I actually said in reply to Angelica that soon there may be a Labour Home Secretary and I’m sure he wouldn’t like it if they tried to influence operational policing in the way SB has. I’m against it in principle regardless which party is in power. Part of a post of mine from earlier; Edit Shortly there may be a Labour HomeSecretary would you really like her/him to interfere in the same way, bearing in mind their views may well be completely different to yours. That’s why politicians shouldn’tattempt to interfere with operational policing decisions it’s not a party issue.
