What do you mean by adjusting the language ?

Yes religion is divisive, but people of different faiths have lived peacefully in Palestine before.

If it's not a one/two state solution, then what is the solution, or do we just have an endless cycle of killing going on from one generation to the next ?

Fair point, I need to challenge my memory and thought process on that one.

Don't worry about it Pinkie, I can't be arsed to explain. They always say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, I at least try, but you've given up at 50 <laugh>

You haven't tried, you just said you can't be arsed <laugh>

Anyway, with specific regard to the two/one state solution, what is the alternative other than an endless cycle of violence ?

I think the original premise of the two state solution is flawed and that pursuing that solution is a waste of efforts.

Even just the border gore alone that they set up will contribute to further problems down the line.

A completely new agreement might bring peace but I don't think it will be found by going for the same old solution.

It's all fraught with complexities, but the Oslo Accords at least were a starting point with specific regards to borders and land sharing etc.

I think you have to start somewhere, even if it isn't perfect, and work from there.

    unfortunately it is, you’re right.

and that’s why it needs regime change on both sides.

wiping out Hamas isn’t going to solve it, as the next incarnation of Palestinian armed resistance will simply flow from that, even more emboldened with hate and vengeance.

    We don't know that.

Everyone said getting rid of ISIS so violently would only lead to something even worse rising in its place. So far, thankfully, that hasn't happened.

Everyone also said that a relatively peaceful and 'organic' end to the Cold War would lead to a fully open and democratic Russia. That hasn't happened either.

So the truth is, we just don't know.

The key is to present both sides with a clear and realistic vision of the future.

Palestinians haven't been allowed to vote for over 15 years but if they voted tomorrow, there's every chance they'd re-elect Hamas in both Gaza and the West Bank, because there just isn't a better vision on the table.

Similar story in Israel. Netanyahu keeps getting returned to power because there currently isn't a vision for peace and so the public defaults to someone who historically was very strong on security and economy.

The conflict internally is such a complex mess, it really needs the international community's help to build that new vision. Strong and bold leadership from the west and much, much more constructive involvement from the Saudis and their satellites.

I find myself agreeing with Welshie again on this one. Forget Oslo. Forget Resolution 1397. These are relics of a bygone era. The region has changed. The world has changed. It is high time for a fresh new approach to this in order to achieve peace and independence on both sides.

I think there’s every likelihood that another armed insurgence / resistance will emerge if Hamas were wiped out.

And unlike ISIS, both Hamas and Hezbollah, are legitimate political groups that are embedded within Palestinian and Lebanese society. True they they both have radical armed resistance ideology, but this is just part of the story.

As for Israel, it’s probably more straight forward for the public to vote out Netanhayu and his religious zealots and right wing nationalists, but he’s a creepy ****er who seems to find a way back to power.

That said, I agree with you. It needs a radically different approach, with different leaders in place and the West and Saudis to assist in brokerage. It also needs those people to stand firm in the direction of peace when, inevitably, there will be people who try and derail it with violence.

I think a two state solution has to be route. As much as a one state power sharing solution would be an ideal, it will need a step by step approach. And that starting point has to be an autonomous Palestinian state. The division of land and resources will be something that might take another generation to sort out, but a legitimate Palestinian state would go a long way to establishing peace in the area in the first instance
