One recent player, that we’d love to have signed is Victor Gyokeres. I’ve attached his transfer history as it might be interesting to compare to Hemir, Burstow and Mayenda with it being so early in their careers. Also for players we might sign in the future. Brighton spotted he was a talent and signed him as a 20 year old. It took 3 years for him to develop into an outstanding player, after he’d been loaned and then sold to Coventry. His longest loan spell before going to Coventry was in 19/20 at second division German side St Pauli - 28 apps, 7 goals and 4 assists.
Defo doing the right thing signing lads with potential rather than throwing wages at plodders who might be a bit better now but unfortunately we don’t have the luxury of being able to throw around a daft few million here or there to forget about a player whilst he’s loaned out numerous times. If we were in the PL with that kind of money it would be a different story. Brighton have signed a few players over the last few years for what seem like modest fees then loaned them straight out cos they can afford to and don’t need them in the squad straight away. Adingra, Undav, Sima and Kozlowski were all about £10m each and have had numerous loan spells over the last few seasons bar Adingra who’s in their squad this season. Would’ve loved us to sign Undav I think he’d score goals for fun in our team but he went to Stuttgart this season on loan.
Agree with all this but doesn't it take quite a few signings with potential before one of them pays off in a couple of years. They are loaned out, but it would take a well run professional coaching team to sort all this out... maybe something we are aiming at in the future.
Yeah of course and fair play to Brighton because they actually seem to throw these lads in at a young age if they look good enough. Great position to be in to be honest when you can invest so much money in talent then either make money or improve your team with them whilst the likes of United throw hundreds of millions around on players with no real resale value.
The problem we have at the moment is getting the balance right of competing now as well as laying the foundations for the future and the model to take shape. The young lads we have signed in the last 12 months I would expect them to develop over the next 2 years and be starting most weeks after that. I think the likes of Clarke and Neil will be away in the next 12 months if we aren't promoted. The players we sign in the next 12 months will probably be brought in and developed getting little bits of game time and be expected to be starting week in and week in 3 years time, and the wheels keep turning and we will have ready made replacements for every player we sell. Like I said the biggest problem we have is competing now until all the cogs are in place, and I for one think we are doing a really good job at it. I'm sure there will be instances when experienced players like Dack become available that will benefit the team at the present time and I believe we need to make sure we have a balance with some experience. I believe we over achieved last season which lifted expectations and some fans thought we'd splash out some big money on the elusive experienced striker to get us promoted but that wasn't going to happen. I think the club would love to be promoted this year, looking at the PL I think we might just about survive as most teams would come at us as they'd expect to win which could benefit us, however if we don't then I'm fine with that, ive said before I think we really need 3 years in the championship at the higher end of the table allowing young players to settle in properly.
If one of our young strikers don't find their shooting boots before January, I'd be tempted to cancel the Mason Burstow loan, send either Hemir or Mayenda on loan and look to bring in a more expereinced striker (30 plus) on a 6 month or 1.5 year deal.
I think our current model is great, buy them young or cheap, develop them and sell them on at the right price. I have a lot of patience and dont mind the wait to get to where we should be. I also have a lot of faith in the current setup and our director of football. Not sure if this is just speculation but he showed that he can score goals in the Championship
Sorry, I was only joking... seen nothing in him so far. Once he was subbed on 65 mins and I hadn't realised he was playing (probably confused him with Jobe).
I think Burstow has potential, but we aren't the team to develop him when we have our own players to develop. Send him back in Jan and bring in someone more "oven ready"
When it comes to strikers either permanent or on loan, any team needs a mix of potential and established. Its no good having all potential because when the potential up front isn't working it's a cause for concern. It's a good job we are able to score goals from a variety of positions (namely Clarke). I think out of all of our wins this season, Clarke has scored in all but 1. Teething problems of the striker "modle" but I'm sure we'll get it right. All of the above is in my opinion of course.
