Wouldn't mind Nathaniel Clyne in to be honest, whether Simmo leaves or not!

That article is bullshit because we havent made him a new offer, the same one is just still on the table.

Simpson's concern is that his team mates new contracts are on the high end of our wage cap and his offer is not, I would guess we havent offered him more than 30k p/w, but even that will be an increase the relatively modest wage he currently earns (signed from Man U reserves).

Yeah but the fact remains that if he tries to play hardball with the club on it then past precedent would indicate that his time is up. Doesn't really matter about the figures.

Yes but you called him mad to play hardball, I'm just saying we can't expect him to sign any contract to stay with us, we have to pay his market value or like any player they go. No modern player accepts below your market value to stay at a club out of love. It really does depend on the figures. Just as it did with Barton and Nolan.

You want the club to be fair to players, as its obviously a sign the football side is being given equal or more weighting than the business side. That is what fans care about, the football. But the reality is they can do as they please and if he is a casualty then that's the way it is. As I say though I don't sit on either side as we don't know the figures.

When the deal fell through in the summer I thought it was because his grandma died. Apparently he was very close to her and understandably he didn't want to be involved with any negotiations etc.

As for our defence if Simpson leaves, I quite like the idea of:

    Santon--Saylor--Coloccini--Pieters

    or

    Santon--Saylor--Coloccini--Cissoco

    or

    Santon--Saylor--Coloccini--Clyne

    or

    Clyne--Saylor--Coloccini--Santon

    or even

    Santon--Saylor--Coloccini--Raylor

would be alright because yesterday aside, Raylor has done a good job at LB for us this season.

Also did anyone else notice that Simpson had probably the best performance of his Newcastle career yesterday. I know it was nothing special but he actually managed to control passes, he tackled someone and he didn't excessively back off the ball carrier for the whole game.

I think he has been outstanding of late and I'm not a fan. Maybe he is trying to prove he's worth more than on the table. Good incentive.

just read it after the transfer window and again recently will try and put it up if i can find it :) hard to say whether it's fact or bullshit you know what the press are like i'll hunt it out now <ok>

edit: the death of his family member happened in the middle of the window and he went on to play for psv about a week later appearing in the euro league as well so not really a factor

I think he's been solid for a while now, people far over-exaggerate the backing off thing and he actually plays some very good games for us at times. Not to mention he's never had a winger who's anything like Gutierrez (Routledge, Barton, Guthrie, Obertan all left him quite exposed).

He looks a work in progress to me but its like a racehorse. You don't just give up before they finished developing. He's still making great strides of improvement to me. Obviously you continue to improve over your whole career but make massive steps in the early years. I still consider him a young player because he is still making the massive steps forward. He has not been backing off as much of late and delivered some decent crosses. Two key areas along with his general passing which were lacking. The good thing is its not heart or concentration because they are hard to train. Technical skills can improve rapidly with good coaching and playing with good players. He's got both at his disposal.

Agree, Pardew's defensive work is clearly paying off with him and while he'll never get in the England squad, he could be a solid and reliable RB for us for years if he's happy to sign the contract. If nothing else, it offers us some stability as even now our turnover of players is huge.

Well he played sh*te yesterday. Every thing he touches turns to cr*p.

Lost count of the amount of times he gives the ball away...or just kicks it out of touch.

Get out, stick Santon in. Simple.

I somehow must of managed to completely miss this in the summer. Whats even the point in agents, why can't players and clubs negotiate directly between each other. It would make every thing a lot easier without these agents demanding daft sums of money for doing very little.

yeah the article leading up to those ones had quotes from his club and player even krul saying he was coming thought it was a bit odd at the time when it didn't happen, also pardew said something about being taken for a ride which everyone thought was about Maiga but it must have been about pieters
hate agents but i think we'll see someone else come in instead of pieters unless he changes agent or they relent which i doubt, knowing us we'll all be expecting pieters or ciss and the club will blindside us and buy some unknown french guy

You simply didn't have your eyes open yesterday if you think everything that he did was crap. I'm no fan of Simpson's but he made some important tackles yesterday and I can vividly remember two because I was surprised at how well he took them.

Whenever he had the ball, espec first half, he gave it away or just kicked it into touch. Im not blind.

Maybe you should all watch it back again, if you can find it. It wasn't a figment of my imagination as I was yelling at my screen.

Simpson is the one wearing no.5.

Maybe because you accept him as sh*te, when he does f*ck up you forgive him and instantly forget it.
