what good would be achieved by messing about at the back and conceding goals in training? I would rather they practiced getting the ball forward and creating chances like our opponents seem to do a lot better than us
That didn't answer my question. How do you play it quickly away from your penalty area without playing direct? Also your point about losing possession in their half we have more chance in defending. We really dont. Our midfield is about as useful in defensive transition as a chocolate teapot. Hence why we conceded our second goal
What pleases me is that whilst I was over the defeat about a second after the final whistle & already looking forward to Huddersfield the result will mar others’ weekends & the whole week, for some. More ****ing about at the back, just for perspective. What goes around … https://x.com/HullCity/status/1717515598421250402?s=20
Messing about at the back in friendlies achieves nothing trying to move the ball forward quickly and create chances would be more useful
There were 4 players pressing. One a yard or two from Seri. Another to his right. Its an absolutely stupid play to keep repeating.am City can maybe do it, we can't. Just cut out that particular play. Problem solved.
what do you think 'direct' means? once you tell me that I will be able to answer your question so you think we are just as likely to concede a goal if we lost possession in our opponents half as losing the ball on the edge of our own penalty area!? I disagree
They did the exact same build up about 5 or 6 times later in the game and non lead to an error. It was a **** pass by Seri. He places the pass better and it reaches Jones and it's a non-issue
why pass to Seri so he can pass to Jones? why not just pass to Jones? we seem to pass for the sake of it a lot there's a risk with every pass better to minimise the passes unless there is a clear advantage
Fair point Ben. I wish it didn't wind me up. However, that clip wasn't related to the way we **** about at the back and more specifically those continuing stupid passes from the keeper to a CM on the edge of our own box when the opposition is pressing hard.
We're pretty much saying the same thing by and large to be fair. I'd just rather we don't put Seri in that position as frequently as we do. We seem to treat that ball as our 'initiate' moment whenever we're under pressure and for me it's too high a risk when there are 9 other potential targets to aim for. The guy with his back to play, in front of our own goal would be my last choice for a pass. That being said, and even despite having no wingers on today - I'm frustrated. The reason I'm frustrated is because we looked quite good in large spells, certainly in the first half and without that clanger I think the whole game plays out differently and we probably get something out of it. The biggest problem, which I think will resolve itself with more time, is when we're playing at pace we don't seem to capitalise on opportunities where there's space and runners available. We're not that good at counter attacking and being clinical when space is available. A little worryingly this is the attacking scenario we're trying to create whenever we're trying to beat the press. That's the reason we do it. We'll play ourselves into a 3v3 or even a 3v2 running at them with space and we rarely finish those phases with goals. I think that will improve as the season goes on to be fair.
By direct I mean any pass attempt longer than 20 yards And yes I do. Conceding possession at any point of the pitch can lead to an attack. It's not so mu Allsop didn't pass to Jones because Wallace was blocking that off. Jones was open at a different angle which Seri could have provided but once again the pass from him was shocking. He made that pass later on in the game and was fine. Also thank you for agreeing there is a risk with every pass. Which is basically what I said in my original response to you.
It’s Birmingham, they’re only related to themselves. Dropping a bollock at the back is dropping a bollock at the back whichever style you play. It works out over the season.
The good is working out how to pass the ball around and beat a press successfully? To get used to the pressure of having to take a one-touch pass with an opponent right on your back? To work on movement so that you know where your teammate should be when you're passing it? Surprisingly, players aren't going to be perfect the first time they try that, so practice is required. Do you understand the concept of practice through repetition?
It was but he didn't. And it will keep happening. We did do the same a few times, like we never learn (or coz Rosenior is so ****ing stubborn). A couple were heart in the mouth moments. All so bleedin unnecessary.
I think the point of the clip has gone completely over your head. The Birmingham keeper plays a quick direct ball, the sort you and Pete are moaning on about wanting, and it gets turned over instantly and we score.
How was Wallace blocking Jones off? Couldnt Allsop throw the ball over Wallace's head to Jones? it would be better than going via Seri
I agree on that front. I think some players can do what Seri does in terms of having his back to attack and being press resistant. Seri often can but I would be naïve to say he can make a mistake given his physicality or lack thereof. I still think he makes that pass 99% of the time and he just cocked that one up. He wasn't really under any pressure and the pass itself was weak as piss. I agree we aren't best on the counter. Our best seems to come from when we've broken the press and our technical players can face the goal with an eye for a pass to a runner. It didn't happen today due to multitude of reasons from not having out and out wingers and I to be honest WBA being very organised when we had the ball. We do need to improve on the counter and set pieces to have another way of breaking teams down. But the squad needs some additions I personally think to help aid that. Be interesting to see how Allsop could throw it over Wallace from a backpass but I'm here to see it happen
