Sunderland’s under-21s side were beaten 4-2 by league leaders Tottenham in Premier League 2 - but how did each player fare for the young Black Cats. First-half goals from Jude Soonup-Bell and George Abbott gave Spurs a 2-1 lead at half-time, after Michael Spellman had equalised for the hosts. Abbott scored a second after the interval before Will Lankshear added a fourth for the visitors, with Nectarios Triantis netting a late consolation goal six minutes from time. Here’s how each Sunderland player fared: 1. Matthew Young - 5 Will feel he should have done better for some of the goals. Spilled a shot which led to Tottenham’s third goal. 5 2. Ellis Taylor - 6 Captained the side and played at right-back. Managed to get forward more in the first half but allowed a few crosses to go into the box in the second. 6 3. Nectarios Triantis - 7 Was comfortable passing the ball out from the back. Scored a late goal from a corner to give Sunderland hope. 7 4. Henry Fieldson - 7 Coped well defensively and managed to help his side advance up the pitch from left-back when he did have the ball. 7 5. Connor Pye - 7 Won some important headers and interceptions at the back. Almost scored at the other end but headed over the bar from a set-piece. 7 6. Marshall Burke - 8 Was comfortable receiving the ball in front of Sunderland’s back four and distributed it well. Also made some important tackles in midfield but appeared to pick up a knock before he was substituted in the second half. 8 7. Ben Middlemas - 6 8. Harrison Jones - 6 9. Michael Spellman - 8 Was a threat in the first half down Sunderland’s right and scored an excellent goal. Appeared to pick up a knock and came off in the second half. 8 10. Jewison Bennette - 7Made some electric runs down the left, particularly in the second half. The winger’s end product could still do with some work, yet he did force a couple of saves from the keeper in the closing stages. 7 11. Harry Gardiner - 5 Played as a lone striker and struggled to get into the game at times against strong opposition. 5 12. Tom Watson - 6 (for Burke, 66) Was introduced on the right in the closing stages. Had a few bright moments yet most of Sunderland’s attacks came on the opposite flank. 6 Phew
Pretty accurate that imo. Pye and Jewi were a threat down the left. Nectar was good at the back and midfield was solid but we needed a bit more strength and power up top.
Incredible turnaround by KLD and Speakman when you look at it since they came in. We were ****ed with the other clowns in charge.
