I genuinely think that messi and ronaldo were separated only by who won the CL that year. that has lead to this type of thinking

messi won 5 first and he had the CLs. Ronaldo was handed quite a few when real won it.

Modric was handed it, benzema FFS. both CL winners.

you can go back to 2007 when guess what. kaka won it with milan for winning the CL.

The fact that Haaland didn't win it is fairly clear, messi won the only trophy bigger than that. The world cup! You can go all the way back to 2006 when cannavaro won it when he won seria a and the world cup with italy.

This is a crowning glory award. the man who "completed football" rubbish. the media want it so the media voted that way. Its really that simple.

VVD got close. 2 years ago mane was 2nd FFS. thats how poor the year was in theory that benzema got it.

Ronaldo is probably done with awards now. I think he's just signed on at his club for 2 more years or something like that. Messi can still win awards but it's probably him done now for even a nomination for Ballon d'or. As I said, I'm not really interested in it unless one of our players is listed and I will always want them to win. Other than that it's not even a distraction.

Agreed. Unless Ronaldo fires Portugal to euros or messi does something useful with Argentina, neither are getting on that list for their club exploits now and rightly so. Playing in poor leagues so you can’t compare their abilities to that of players in top league now.

neither should ever be mentioned again in terms of this.

the standard is this is a global award based on European champions leagues and World cups.

it'll be at least 10 years before Saudis can buy all of football even if they can buy the journos.

Apart from FIFA changes the rules to include the last World Cup as well as Messi being on his Retirement tour in Florida , so shouldn’t have even been included

The rules and criteria for winning the Ballon d'or have changed to "Individual performance and the candidate's decisive and impressive character take precedence over the collective aspect and trophies won, as well as the player's class and sense of fair play".

Make of that what you will.

The rules are who is the best player. There is no rules about what you do and don’t take into consideration?

Never really knew what time period it covered. Always assumed was just based on last season? Why it’s held 4 months into the new season makes no sense

it's an odd one as all these stars are expected to travel for it and yet its not scheduled to be in any way convenient.

someone has let it be known that utd would need to pay 15mil to sack ten haag.

whether it's the club trying to explain why it won't be happening very soon or the manager trying to show he's expensive to be rid of is anyone's guess.

I'm not a fan of sacking managers after a short run of bad games.

I'd rather he was given time to have a much longer run of bad games.
