I think there should be a limit on how many times you can win it, maybe 3, I don't know. The year Virgil should have won it, he was the best defender in the world yet Messi wins again. However, this year Haaland was 2nd placed and I can see the case for Messi winning it over him: a top goalscorer v a top football player. Haaland got the award he deserved.
why? A player has 10 years at the top unless they have a long career. If they are the best in the world why should you say someone else is, just cos? Messi is far better player than haaland ever will be so I've no issue with a guy who wins the world cup getting the award. after all its a POPULARITY CONTEST the numbers put up by certain dueo of players were far in excess of what others did, that period is now over and done so start again from here. haaland, mbappe, bellingham will all be wanting to win this. One has no international team but dirty oil money helping him. one has no club team but probabaly will win euros. The third has the glamour club and should be in the CL final.
I don't think Haaland deserved it this time but neither did Messi. He had the worst season of his career, stats wise, but won the WC which is obviously why they've decided to give it to him. There's no doubt in my mind that Messi is the best player in the world but - just to use 2019 as an example - why should the best attacking player get it over the best defensive player when the attacking player has already won it 5 times? It was the perfect opportunity to go off script. As saint rightly pointed out, it's journalists who vote for the winners and there's clearly a heavy Messi bias.
why should who won what matter in the year. in 2019 messi won la liga and top scored in Europe. in 2019 vvd won the cl. thsts it. it was a close run thing and 686 points messi and 679 for vvd. as.much as you or I might like our boy we have to say that more journos voted mane and salah rather than just mane and in effect that's what happens. BTW 5 city players were on the list this year I'm sure haaland could have won it with less city votes.
It obviously mattered who won what this time because Messi only won it because of the WC. My only interest in these types of awards is when Liverpool players are nominated and then I want them to win. Apart from that they pass me by unnoticed.
