I was at Wembley when the cockneys booed Robson, awful ignorant fans. Cannot say I've heard Southgate received the same vitriol

He's quite exceptional. He'll still be twenty around the time of next Euros. TWENTY!!
Given the choice, I'd take him before any other player in the world.

sat here watching them pass about in their own half way line, screaming for someone to run at italy and what happened when they actually did run...this squad has skill and potential, i don't hate southgate as he has done well but i honestly feel if he just threw caution to the wind during some games they would win at a canter, refrain from saying 'unplayable/unbeatable' type phrases of course, but it would be more exciting.

Lucky he wasn't sent off last night, if so, it would have been a completely different outcome, as we know too well,.

England defender Harry Maguire says supporters who booed midfielder Jordan Henderson "aren't England fans".

Henderson was booed when he was substituted in Friday's 1-0 friendly win over Australia and when he came on in the 3-1 Euro 2024 qualifying victory against Italy on Tuesday.

Former Liverpool captain Henderson was criticised for joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq this summer.

"Proper England fans don't boo players," said Maguire.

"Don't boo players who dedicate their life to play and do everything they can to make this country have good memories and have special moments for them and their families."

Henderson was a vocal ally of the LGBTQ+ community during his time at Liverpool, but was criticised by some fans and LGBTQ+ campaigners for moving to Saudi Arabia, where same-sex sexual activity is illegal.

England are capable of winning Euro 2024 - Southgate
England manager Gareth Southgate said after the Australia game that "it defies logic" that fans booed captain Henderson, who said he must take criticism "on the chin".

Henderson received a slightly warmer reception when he came off the bench in the 70th minute against Italy.

"You heard when he came on the cheers and a few jeers, but they aren't England fans," said Maguire.

Maguire has been booed by Manchester United and England supporters over the past year.

Last month Southgate said criticism of Maguire was "a joke", and his mother Zoe described the abuse he has received as "disgraceful".

I don't agree with the booing of Maguire. Don't boo your own players if they haven't done something worthy of it (being in ****e form but still pulling on the shirt for club or country when asked isn't worthy of booing imo) not his fault Soutgate keeps calling him up!

Henderson on the other hand deserves to be booed and Maguire and Southgate can **** off suggesting otherwise!

I havnt been caught up in the fervour of international football since I was a kid. Lost the feeling years ago. I still like to see them win, theres still a hint of pride lurking at the back of my brain, but i dont get upset when they lose. However until these entitled ****ing twerps either piss off, or at least exit their footballing bubble and acknowledge the reason as to why Henderson is getting booed, then i think im going to start enjoying the satisfaction of them failing. How they can, for example, 'take the knee' then defend Henderson? The hipocracy is mindblowing. Or they are just thick as ****. Probably both? I'm proud he's getting booed!

Danny Murphy made a good point today.
Rico Lewis plays ahead of Kalvin Phillips for City, and hes having a very good season so far.
How can Southgate justify picking Phillips constantly for every squad over the likes of him and Ward Prowse, who shine for their club teams and actually play?

To me this is worse than Maguire constantly getting the nod ahead of better CBs like Dunk and Tomori that play every week for their clubs and are successful week in week out for them.

I know we won last night, and it was a very good performance mainly due to how good Bellingham is, but i really do worry this next tournament will be another wasted opportunity to win with Southgate in charge.
Hes been blessed with the best pool of players England have produced in decades.

Not only that but the top teams are generally not as good as they have been in the past. No France of '98 for example. They are all beatable. We have the perfect storm to win something, except for having a top class manager.

Pep also prefers to play Stones in the holding role aswell next to Rodri over Phillips. I think he is excellent there everytime ive seen him play, and him and Rice would be a very solid CDM partnership abit like Rodri and Stones when they play alongside eachother, and this would also allow Dunk, Colwill, Tomori or Guehi to come in and play CB.

Southgate has so many options to have us an unbelievable team, but constantly picks Henderson or Phillips to play there next to Rice. Its becoming abit of a joke now and very frustrating to see.

For me I think Southgate is too defensive minded which was evident in the Euro finals. He is on record as saying England can only ever win a tournament with a defensive mindset as shown by Italy when they won the world cup with Cannavaro. He will not change that set up and I believe we are wasting some generational talent with him in charge. His record on the face of it looks good but is not great under closer scrutiny and I personally think that the achievements of the last few years are in spite of him not because of him.
He was poor as a club manager although to give him some credit he started to bring young talent into the team, but has since fell in to the trap of picking his trusted players to play for England even when their form has fallen off a cliff.
His reaction to tactical in game changes is slow and ponderous and his inability to change formations to suit opponents is, in this day and age scary as most top teams are able to adapt systems to suit certain formations and opponents.
As you can probably tell I am not his biggest fan and when I get into conversations down the local I always ask the same question.
IF Pep or Klopp were in charge of England at the Euro final playing against an aging Italy team would England have started with 2 holding midfielders (possibly but in a more fluent in and out of possession way), scored and then tried to sit on a 1 goal lead or would they have continued to attack and score another 2 or 3 and would England have won the Euro's ??

I typed out about the hypocrisy if the England set up in supporting Henderson so publicly but removed it. You said pretty much the same thing.

I think that's what's pissing me off about it! I also stopped being arsed about watching England a decade or so ago.

Southgate will be what stops this group of players winning a tournement or two. He continues to pick players who are his trusted blokes in the camp. Henderson and Maguire should no longer be going, add Phillips to that as his career has come to a grinding halt and I think he was overrated before that anyway!

The way Grealish sat warming the bench at the last tournament shows the style of manager he is (boring defensive ****e!). I haven't watched any of the qualifiers so no idea what he does with Grealish these days!

I dont think he knows either. He only started picking him after City paid millions for him from Villa.

Who would you have in his place?

Foreign mercenaries have been woeful failures here, and I don't see an English contender.

Southgate is not perfect. His main flaw IMO, is that in the two huge games England have played under him, I'd say he froze in both after early goals and didn't react until equalisers went in. This, its fair to say, must change or we cant win a big one.

But - and this is not a given at all - the team has a fantastic spirit, at variance with the often fractious, and wag influnced teams of the past. Southgate has a very large role in that.

There are a lot of good young players, but he has played them when many others would not have. Allardyce particularly would have baulked at playing some of them. This early introduction to International football has been invaluable, and will pay-off.

No-one can say who might win a Euros. But England now at least are genuine contenders.

I imagine Southgate's clumsy dalliance with politics and right on causes irritates many - it irritates me too, and I'd like to think the FA's embarrassment this last two weeks will see him keep away from this stuff. But he has definitely earned his shot bext year IMO.
