18th Oct - The ONS said consumer prices rose 6.7% annually in September, matching the rate seen in August.

Would be interesting to see what the inflation rate would have been without oil prices, over which we have no control, hadn't risen.

Going to go higher sadly I suspect. Events in Israel and Gaza have already seen more spikes in oil prices and you can only imagine the situation there, unless checked, will hurt western economies. Food prices still falling, a small mercy, but I filled my motor up earlier this week and noticed the uptick in prices at the pump.

Irony upon irony here. The price of crude in the markets is measured by the price of Brent crude.....British. I've never been able to understand the logic of that, given that the supply is largely controlled by the Saudis and their allies, although I know WTI is also a market component. Something to do with the quality of the oil I think.
Also, the price we pay at the pump is not only driven by the price of crude....UK Govt tax also plays a big part.

Article in the Guardian today by Larry Elliott spells it out a bit. Some gloomy scenarios indeed. I would stop reading before the last paragraph mind as Niall Ferguson paints a real doomsday scenario.

    Looks that way.

It's a very strange time with the Arab world buying our football clubs, to ingratiate themselves, yet being pushed into conflict with us over Israel.

Sunak's promised of unequivocal unending support was an error imo.

Out of the frying pan with Pincher <doh>

"A Conservative byelection candidate has defended sharing a Facebook post telling jobless parents who cannot feed their children to “f*ck off” if they still pay a £30 phone bill.

Andrew Cooper is seeking to replace the former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher as MP for Tamworth in one of two byelections on Thursday.

Rishi Sunak later refused to condemn Cooper’s comments at prime minister’s questions."

    As Norman Tebbit would say,

'Get in your electric car, if your power hasn't been cut off, and pay the ULEZ charge or find a train that hasn't been cancelled ...

... and if you land a zero hours contract we'll cut off your benefits immediately but take six weeks to reinstate it if you don't make it through the four week trial period."

Zero hours contracts should be illegal in a developed country like ours ...

... how on earth can decent people make progress when their entire livelihood hangs by the thinnest of threads.

I'm being honest now, I'd rather become an armed robber.
