This is the problem, there’s hardly any runners. Everything is so methodical and slow. Most fast paced attacks come from Delap doing a Messi and waltzing past a defender or similar. How often we get the ball into an advanced position and there’s nobody busting a gut to get up and support at all, the only thing to do is try and take on defenders, smash a hopeful ball in the box or pass it back and start again.
exactly and it's why delap is so crucial to us becasue he tries can make runs at defenders and into space how often do we make passes into spaces outside of long direct balls? we dont properly utilise attackers we try and be too methodical and i dont think we are 'good' enough for it.
We’re currently trying to be that Arsenal side from the 2000’s that tried to over complicate things & walk it into the net.
I really don't want to see Hull City become a "poor man's Arsenal 2000" but fear it's going that way.
I said this the other day. We don’t actually play through balls on the ground to anybody. None of our wingers or forwards make runs in behind the opposition’s lines. They all drop deep to retain possession. We’re slow and methodical and ball-retention is obviously considered most important thing for this team. We rely on the individual brilliance of the likes of Tufan to shoot outside the box, Delap to use his pace and strength to carry the ball forward and Philogene to dribble past players to create chances. However, what we don’t do is try to play neat passes on the ground between the opposition’s lines and the reason we don’t do that is because it risks losing possession if it’s intercepted or the pass is over or under hit. I think this is why people call Roseniorball boring. It’s a lot like Russell Martin’s football which is minimal-risk possession football where ball-retention is key. It actually makes less sense for us and Southampton to play this way because both teams have very talented midfielders with great vision and passing range. Ipswich create a lot of chances with their expansive style of possession football where the wingers and forwards make runs off the ball and the full-backs overlap and their midfield is nowhere near ours in terms of technical ability.
You mean like some of the through-balls that Connolly has been getting on to? Some haven't come off and others have been chipped, but hardly long-balls.
I think we do play quite a few, not as many as you’d like to see perhaps, but we do try them. It’s not like that Steve Bruce team which amassed a whopping 7 through balls in an entire season (which was less than every other team in the division managed in a single game).
I think the reason Jobes and Freaves mostly turn infield to play the ball it’s less risk than playing a ball to an isolated winger - wish Ipswich had done that !!!
