At the end of the day, Neil has to step up and accept he's responsible. He was on a yellow card, and then committed a yellow card offence of swearing at the referee (nobody knows what exactly was said). We were all informed at the beginning of the season that swearing would not be acceptable towards the ref. This gave the ref a decision to make, in a high profile game on live tv. If he hadn't acted accordingly then he may have been reprimanded by the ref association. In MY opinion the ref made the right call ....... hopefully Neil will learn from this.
Well, a day to move on from I suspect, reading this. I missed first half, checked half time and saw Neil off. Dashed home and saw 0-2, so chucked the golf clubs in the car and went for a round. I will watch the game back tomorrow. For now I want to say thia thread is a good read, no major toys being thrown out of pram. I worried Neil would be getting dogs abuse but I should have known better, good bunch on here. If Neil is off for dissent he needs a kick up the arse and a heft fine. Nothing worse than dropping your team mates in the **** for dissent in my opinion. I hope, and suspect he is, hurting big time. I am his biggest cheerleader, but I hope we win withoit him and he has has to spend some time on the bench as a result of his daftness. If the ref hasnt been even handed with it then we can only hope the aithorities see it. Lets be honest. Still 4th. Ekwah, Dack etc back after the break. Hopefully Rusyn and co sharper. Learning curve today maybe, but these lads have learned every lesson so far, they will learn this one.
Apologies totally forgot Neil wasn’t the captain and O’nien was.. can someone fill me in what happened cos I was a pint.
Hume crunched into one of their players. Ref gave a goal kick. Neil (from 20 yards away) allegedly said "That was a ****ing foul ref" whilst waving his arms and walking (slowly) towards the ref. Ref gave him a 2nd yellow for dissent.
Basically Neil went towards the ref and shouted "That was a f#cking foul", and then he got a 2nd yellow for saying a nasty word. Absolutely fecking disgraceful decision and echoes what alot of managers have come out and said this season that the standard of officiating is not up to scratch and its ruining the game.
Surely a ticking off from the ref and a warning about a 2nd yellow being issued if he swore again would have been the right way to deal with a situation like that in such a big game infront of 45k fans and 1 minute away from half time
Good point, retrospective punishment would mean that the customer is not cheated out of a game by a decision like this travesty we have just witnessed , on retrospective bans this idiot Gillett should not be allowed anywhere near a football stadium again.
Embarrassing, I wish I was lucky enough to be in a position where my decisions couldn’t be scrutinised and I could just wave people away and get them fined for a difference of opinion
How did you get on with the golf mate? There's nowt like pinging one straight at the flag and knocking in a 2 footer. That feeling when you hit it sweet off the fairway is class.
On the plus side. Over the 90+ minutes there was only 1 time that anybody swore. If anybody else did they would have got a yellow card…..wouldn’t they? (I wonder what they did say, my goodness, oh dear, how unfortunate, drat…..) It must have been the most polite game ever with only one swear word.
It must have been a horrible shock for the poor ref to hear a naughty word on a football pitch. I hope he's ok.
If he'd walked up casually to the ref and swore probably nothing would have happened. It's probably the fact he stormed over from over 20yds shouting his case, It was obvious he wasn't saying " I say old chap I think you missed an earlier foul, please re consider", but if thats what you believe he said then thats your opinion ..... not mine as I have already stated. Take your red and white specs off and see the reality. If it had been a Boro player on a yellow doing the same, would you be honestly saying its harsh ..... I doubt it.
Well I am sitting here looking back. The game effectively finished by the ref. Was Niel irresponsible _ probably. If I am honest I had that nervous feeling as soon as he was booked My problem is the sheer inconsistent refereeing. How they got away with so much in that first half is beyond me. To sum up I will remain optimistic. 11v11 we edged it in fact I thought it was a canny match. Second half if I am honest I am not sure we got our tactics right but I can't other than O9 into CM think what we could have done. Bad day at the office. We go again.
He's an Australian ref, brought over about 3 or 4 years ago on an exchange improvement project, though it seems it's ruined what talent as a ref he had. He was made a premier League ref two seasons ago. There's not been a lot of controversy about him compared to others, but then again he's got a lower profile. There was a fair bit of criticism last year about an iffy penalty he awarded Brentford against Bournemouth when the Bournemouth manager said he'd want an apology off him. The previous time he'd refereed a Bournemouth match he sent off a Bournemouth player after awarding a controversial penalty in the play off semi final between them and Brentford. There was also some stuff involving him as a VAR official with West Ham when he got a goal chalked off that shouldn't have been and against Arsenal when he didn't refer the ref for a possible penalty to Arsenal but did later for a less clear one for Man City (which was probably correct). Last season as referee he awarded a late controversial free kick to Burnley against West Brom that they scored the winner from. There's been some other stuff as well, but most of the criticism is that he's arrogant. He might not always have been that, but it seems something that's crept into him. It's telling to me that he's only reffed 3 EPL matches and today's game in the league, yet been VAR official 4 times this season so far.
Well when I said sorted out I meant by us winning 3-0 not the other way round. Dan shouldn't have give the Ref a decision to make and once he did it was good night Vienna. Enjoy the break, move on and get back to winning ways.
