The government seem to believe Manchester is in the north, if so where do they think the a66 and a69 are.

Starts on the north bank of the Tees. Boro are steam from the midlands.

England is covered by 6 degrees of latitude (50-60N). If that’s 2 degrees each for south , midlands and north , then Birmingham is in the south and Manchester and Leeds are in the midlands

Anywhere south of Sunderland may as well be doing the Lambeth Walk.

If the Centre is in Leicester then for me Manchester, Sheffield and Probably Leeds are all in the Midlands and should not be classed as Northern. The North is from Leeds to the borders

Not sure about this. Glasgow is less than 55.5 degrees north last time I checked.
As for north it is very subjective, but my line is north of the Humber.

The Norths southern extent is at the southern borders of the traditional counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire. Apologies to the people of Glossop.

It's more a state of mind and common sense than geographical.

Edinburgh is further west than Manchester but residents consider themselves to be in the east.

Birmingham is further south than Norwich but they don't consider themselves in the South, or the Midlands that matter.

Gretna Green is further south than Whitley Bay but it's not in England because of a line across a map.

Difficult to say, because as a Scotsman, Berwick feels a bit southern to me

I'd say anywhere north of Leeds is "north"

Interesting because a decent chunk of south eastern Scotland was a part of the North historically.
