Part of the problem is that the media can't seem to make their minds up on whether they're interested in the right decision enough to be satisfied with waiting 2 to 3 mins for it, or whether they want to slam VAR for taking too long.
Whether it's within the rules to allow the ref to stop the game or go backwards is irrelevant in this discussion... He's already ****ed up and gone against the rules so he could have done it again to rectify the original mistake. The officials were going to get **** either way but at least the right decision would have been reached.
Really disappointed that Klopp's suggested replaying the game. It's never going to happen and makes us look silly imo. The focus should be trying to make the system and process better to reduce the risk of it happening again, it's about improving the game and the officiating. His comments regarding the red cards are exactly right though
Just seen Klopp talking about a replay, I don't agree. If there was no VAR which is what I'd prefer we'd have to accept mistakes happen. I'd be happier with my club if we called out the VAR system and pushed that it was not fit for purpose. Other than moaning about decisions.
I never said go backwards though. I said stop the game. he can stop it any time he feels like. He is like the captain of HMS bounty, the master after god of all those aboard. He could have stopped and admitted the error on the basis of his var idiot telling him the mistake he made. all the arties concerned could then have shrugged and said for **** sake and moved on. I don't really think "going back" is even the right thing to do as the rules are crystal. once the game was kicked off oops. that doesn't absolve him of just ignoring it and whistling then giving a faux apology months later.
I'd agree with you. no way should they replay. If he thinks both the ref and the VAR were actually corrupt and match fixing he should just say so. This is about fixing the system for the good of all, not about us gaining and benefit imo.
No one wants or thinks it should be replayed. Move on. However what I will say in defence of klopp that unlike the headline on sky of ‘klopp demands replay’. He hasn’t demanded anything, he hasn’t even properly called for it to be replayed. merely said as manager of lfc would like to be done and maybe the right thing. But knows it won’t happen. think that’s very different from demanding the that the fa/premier league allow a replay
It’s clear that they should have told the referee. Stop the game, or at the next break. Tell him and say look we ****ed up. Rules technically state we can’t do anything (although no one is going to care if they just corrected it 20 seconds after play restarted ). But could have called managers captains together with 4th official. Said look there was a **** up, the goal was clearly onside, spurs are you happy to let lfc walk the ball in? If spurs then say no then that’s on them and game goes on as normal. Refs should have put the onus back onto the managers to make a decision then and there
Gab Marcotti on ESPN made an interesting point about how the 4th official broke protocol in the world cup final 2006 to check Zidane's headbutt and get him sent off, as precedent for the view that the ref should've broken protocol here.
The BBC goes with "Klopp wants replay". Similarly, in the text it says that he thinks that is what should happen, but it probably won't. He's expressing an opinion, not making demands, but journos have to make the most noise they can.
That's not correct mate. He's actually said the opposite. He said he's not speaking as Liverpool manager but as a fan of football that a replay would be the solution but it's unlikely to happen. He qualified it by saying that as a 56 year old, he's never seen a similar situation, it's completely unprecedented so comparing it to anything else doesn't work. At the end of the day, football is a simple game with the only objective to score more goals than the opposition in order to win the game. Over the years we've added offside, handball, obstruction, taking the game back a few seconds to an infringement etc etc. ...... in order to rule out a goal. Before VAR every single team had goals ruled out unfairly so one team benefited while one lost out. Since VAR there's a new protocol. If protocol is now cutting out the very essence of what the game is all about, by having and applying a rule - let's be clear here, for the very first time ever - that stops a legitimate goal from counting, then the game really is well and truly done. Because it's that rule that makes the significant difference here. And Klopp's whole interview was magnificent.
Mic up the ref / officials and screen it the way its done in other sports. Would be ideal if thats what actually came from this but chances are slim.
As always, there are lots of people willing to and purposefully taking it out of context. Ferguson could say literally anything he wanted to and people bowed down to him. Klopp says something, bearing in mind English isn't his first language, and he's the villain of the piece. As Liverpool FC we're used to marching to our own beat, this is just the latest thing that everyone is faux annoyed about.
I agree 100%. Just sort of linked to that is the VAR audio which already exists and as fans, we are now being given bite sized chunks. The outstanding difference with this one and the others we have been privy to, is the laziness of the communication. The others I have heard all include double confirmations of the exact decision eg VAR - "just to confirm, just to confirm, goal stands, goal strands" Ref- goal stands, goal stands". Very military-like meaning there is zero chance of not agreeing on the course of action.
I thought that Klopp was brilliant today. Can’t express how lucky that I think we are to have him. now onto the next game and let the journos make up what they want.
