Disgraceful mistake, of course, but this guy doesn't appear to exist prior to this event. He's obviously a real person and fought for the Nazis, but the internet has no record of it. How did he end up getting praised at this event? What's his story? Where does he live? Why hasn't he faced any repercussions? I think he's a Ukrainian who moved to Canada, but that's all inference. None of the reporting seems to answer my questions.

A kid operating as a "freedom fighter" against the USSR at any time up to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact ending 2, A volunteer in a Waffen SS foreign regiment With just the vague possibility of #2 being the case, I would have at least asked his reps whether that was so (at least you have the "acted in good faith" defence if you cannot definitely find info quickly enough either way) .
Does he have reps? If so, why? That kind of highlights what I mean, though. If he's just some random Canadian now and he's presumably retired, then how did he come up? Why was he put forward for this and who selected him? It seems weird, to me.
