Maybe because Beardsley wasn’t a CB that would make sense.

Think I’d always go for the great player than the good if I had the choice. Especially if picking a promising youngster I’d be selling on in a year or two like Gillingham would be doing. But I’d have no problem you picking Bruce so long as you weren’t involved in my team.

Don’t think it was a straight contest with the winner being CB for Gillingham.

I have to admit there is a bit of an assumption on my part in that statement but I’m fairly confident that I’m right.

 

So he didn't pick Bruce ahead of Beardsley he just didn't pick Beardsley which is different.
