How the tables looked on the 18th September 1923.. would’ve never guessed a certain north east club were above United I wasn’t aware they’d even been that high in the football league!
South Shields have a really interesting history. Lots of variations of the club name and reincarnations. I think the club in that league table were elected to play in div 2 after the war, having dominated the north east divisions pre and during, someone may correct me. They had a success, think they got to am fa cup quarter final. Also they had an english interntational in their side (my memory may be playing tricks but think they might have sold him to us for an at the time record fee). The version of south shields in that paper were formed as a youth team initally called south shields adelaide. They basically carried all before them at youth level then onto northern league. I read a bit about them years ago so if I have my memories mixed up apologies. There is definitely a good history to south shields though.
Sunderland played 6, won 2, drew 1, lost 2. Have we got a 100yr old mystery on our hands? Shurrup there was no such things as typos then!
Few clubs I didn't know where actual league Sides...Nelson, Merthyr and Durham...you learn something new every day
Nelson has 1 season I think before dropping back to regional stuff. Clapton Orient, always liked that original name. 40 odd years they were called that, after being an offshoot of a local cricket club. I love the history of some of our historic clubs.
I nicked this photo from Facebook, (many thanks to whoever owns it) it shows our fans attending the 1913 FA Cup final at Crystal Palace against Aston Villa we lost 0-1. Despite the score, I bet we took over even in 1913
126,000 there ! some went by bike and horse and cart i reckon, officially the record crowd in England 1923 cup final guess work. Nearly did the 'double' as well
