In 1887 when an Irish Brother was planning a new source of revenue to feed the starving people from the West of Scotland and to provide a gathering or a social occasion he could never have envisage the massive club with world wide association that would develop. The Brother went to his fellow country men to help to get his venture off the ground. Within a short number of years it was obvious that their grounds were just not big enough. The committee obtained new grounds were Celtic Park are today, again the Irish people gave up all their free time and worked ceaselessly to get the new Park ready. It was still mainly only Irish people who rushed to Celtic Park on match days. It was said at the time the Scottish were too tight and too mean to pay in. However as more and more Irish fans attended the matches some glory hunters Scots with little or no Irish affiliations began to attend. However for decades the ethnically cleansed Roman Catholic Irish from the six counties and the economically deprived people from Donegal continued to flock to Scotland in big numbers and Celtic remained very much an Irish club. In the early years of this century less and less Irish emigrated to Scotland and suddenly there was a more even break-down of nationalities. There can be only three reasons for the police to have a problem with Celtic fans. Are the police are biased. Surely not. Two only a very small % of Irish fans sing offensive songs. Police arrest and charge All the Rangers fans sing Offensive songs The police show a blind eye and ear. So the problem is not enough Celtic fans sing their songs. The people who started coming to Celtic Park as glory hunters should start giving full support to Celtic and what Celtic stands for. Celtic have a world wide following which certainly is not down to the Scottish element of the club. The Irish are loved the world over and that love has been extended to Celtic. If the Irish had not started and stayed with Celtic and left it to the Scots alone to support then; Scottish Celtic fans should look at Clyde and see the size and influence that Celtic would be without the Irish. The glory hunters descendants go on forums every where sprouting their hatred of the Irish connections and try to disown the Irishness of the club. This is music to the ears of our jealous enemies and add sustenance to the SPL and Strathclyde Police who try to undermine us. Just as not all Scottish and non Irish fans are not all glory hunters, not all Irish fans are trouble but we need to create more similar ground and work together to keep Celtic great.

Thanks Stereo, we are all proud of having you as a moderator. Is there any wonder Catholic/Celtic fans are been attacked all over the West of Scotland when you would rather try to ridicule someone trying to point out the unjust society, but at the same time you don't mind posting an Anti Protestant/Rangers post. This type of post is great as long as you post it. Even though with your own self praise that you are above average IQ, it doesn't mean that you are the only person allowed to start a post.
Its not about removing the irish connection, imo, its about curbing chants about the ira. I've said my reasons for this on a few threads - so no reason to labour my point. I believe a majority of people want to remove the ira chants - nothin more.
Dev Advocate, I certainly do not suggest all Celtic fans are Catholics. I have gone to Celtic Park for years with non Catholics, many of whom are great singers of the Irish songs + add-ons. Stereo Typist I will lighten up for God'son sake if you stop depicting an Irish Brother in a racist, sneering and mocking way. Pud Irish songs with and without IRA add-ons have always been song at Celtic Park except for some years earlier in this century when Celtic became a morgue. Thank God the Green Brigade came as other club fans had started to mock us for our lack of atmosphere. Rather than condemn the Green Brigade the people who manage Celtic Park will have to co-operate with the Green Brigade and confirm what is allowed and what isn't. Without joint decisions there may well be occasions when Chant and songs are sung that would perhaps better not. This is due mostly to frustration that some people feel that the people who make the Difference between a great club like Celtic and a down and out club like Clyde are not respected. There is another post on this forum which talks about the jealously that 2nd and 3rd generation Irish diaspora have in London and elsewhere with Glasgow. Don't kill it off.
I am not aware of any Celtic supporter who wants to forget, deny or denigrate the contribution that the Irish community have brought to Celtic. However, people from Ireland have as many different points of view as the rest of us. There is no one view fits all stance that can be taken. So it annoys when people hide behind this Irish connection as a very lazy excuse for singing pro-IRA chants at CP. We have got a huge repertoire of songs, including Irish ones,. Quite why these aren't enough for a few people, I'll never know.
Believe Lennon and the Board want to meet the GB and speak to them what is the best for the club going forward. The GB need to listen tho as to what is being requested. Don't bin the Irish connection but forget any songs about the IRA and bin the IRA add ons. Agreed, without the GB the atmosphere would be very very flat but they need to consider other fans.
Fair point. I hope there is a compromise somewhere. I don't know what Lennon can add to the discussion though.
Is he not on the fans level - the reason for his appointment! Who knows RB... but something's got to give.
In 1994 Tatanka kept telling the fans of the wwf (now wwe) that Lex Luger was getting paid off by the million dollar man. Turned out that Tatanka was the pay of The Million dollar man all along. I mentioned on the other thread that the appointment of Lennon was well orchestrated. Looking like he is on our level is part of that. I don't know if he is or isn't. He seems a decent guy. He doesn't appear to be a stupid man.
