Last one it was bad for me was Poyet, there's not having defenders ideally suited to it and then there's what we had. Never been so nervous watching Sunderland week in week out. I thought he was a great character but similar to Di Canio, not the best manager.
I think he bottom line is having someone who knows what they're doing being in charge of the club. KLD seems to know what he's doing, he has been raised amongst it and studied it. Ferguson at Man U knew what he was doing, had total control of the football. Clough had total control wherever he was. But managers come and go, 99% are not Clough/Ferguson, so makes sense to have the control of club philosophy elsewhere.
Always think fondly of his time, but yes, not a great manager. In his defence, had to deal with the Sunderland 'culture' problems.
I said before we played them when I seen the line up their midfield was surprising for a team that’s just came down.. compare it to Leicester’s tonight and you wouldn’t think they’d both just been relegated. Not an exact 3v3 match up but essentially Smallbone, Charles and Downes in there compared to KDH, Ndidi and Winks. 3 young lads who’ve never really played above this level against Winks who was an England international and CL finalist (might have even been a PL runner up?), KDH who’s the least experienced of the 3 yet was on the brink of an England call up, has europa league experience and obvs a few seasons of PL football under his belt then Ndidi is a full international with 200 PL games behind him.
Yeah he did but looking at his career afterwards that probably wasn't the problem. Great bloke though and like you I've got good memories of his time with us. Just not watching Brown and O'Shea try to pass it out from defence like cavemen trying to play a PlayStation.
