Keith Moon died on this day in 1977 , I still think that the Who's Charlton gig was one of the best live shows I've seen and Moony was the driving force I like to think he is blowing up a toilet or driving a Rolls into a swimming pool somewhere
The Who were punk before there was punk. Big influence on da Ramones. My Generation especially. I Can’t Explain and Substitute are classics too. Da Brothers covered Substitute on their Acid Eaters (covers) album
Sat in the garden with a glass of red watching the bats take to wing as the sun disappears listening to the Fleet Foxes
Alfie, sorry to be a pedant but he died on this day a year later in '78. I always knew that, because whilst in 1978 I wasn't really particularly aware of The Who, I was a big Jam fan and the first single I bought by them was Down in the Tube Station at Midnight when it was released in October '78. On the B-side was a surprisingly good Foxton song, The Night, and a cover of The Who's So Sad About Us. Whilst it was something they played live quite a bit, clearly Moon's death was the catalyst to release their version as well as featuring the picture of him on the back of the sleeve. Incidentally, I still have my original copy of Tube Station single, in surprisingly good nick, 45 years later!
Whilst my love of all music Wellerian is plain for all to see, I do also have a great deal of affection for The Stranglers, they are certainly the band I have seen most after Weller, and I do believe that their music post Hugh Cornwell is extremely under rated here are just a few of my faves since Hugh (who was a undeniably a great front man) left.
I saw them post Hugh in Frejus in the Cote d Azur on Bastille day, it was in a big amphitheatre by the port and they tore the place up, I went along expecting nothing more than a tribute act but left absolutely knackered Edit a few years ago = 20 plus Mrs Conn informed me
I recall seeing them in 82 (with Hugh) at The Brighton centre, just after Golden Brown and Strange Little Girl had been big hits, I was a little worried as we travelled to the gig that they may not be the same band that I had seen promote The Raven (a great album) in 79 the last time I had seen them. All fears were allayed when they came on blasted through No More Heroes and all was well with the world Something like this and finished with this
