A device on NASA's rover has finished a world-first experiment generating oxygen on Mars. The toaster-sized instrument produced enough to sustain an astronaut for a few hours, giving hope for future human exploration. https://news.sky.com/story/nasa-manages-to-produce-oxygen-on-mars-12957288 They were able to extract 122g of oxygen in total - which can support an astronaut for about three hours. Around 5g is enough for an astronaut for 10 minutes, giving hope that production on a larger scale could support human life and provide rocket fuel during future explorations. The device, called MOXIE, produced oxygen on 16 separate occasions since the first attempt in April 2021, and the result has far exceeded NASA's original goals, according to Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy.
Interesting. I'm assuming it'll only ever be for space suits and at most, sealed confined spaces. not atmospheric because without a magnetic field and planetary spin it would be stripped away immediately by the sun. Still incredible though with huge potential.
I wonder how much this toaster cost…….who the fk can afford to waste so much money on something that has zero value to the human race
Saw this article yesterday, across numerous media sources... Named Ho’oleilana, the newly-discovered ‘bubble’ of galaxies is around one billion light-years across and is centered 820 million light-years away from the Milky Way. The discovery has significant implications for how the expansion rate of the Universe is measured — a major point of contention amongst cosmologists. https://www.sci.news/astronomy/hooleilana-12250.html “We’re now a step closer to a great change in the field of cosmology, where the whole model of the Universe might need re-evaluating.” Shortest video I could find on it...
I couldn't make out if it was claimed as 1,000 years old when it died or if it died a thousand years ago, I assumed the later, eventually. The guy involved in the research, had previous research of his deemed fake. Although their size for me captures the imagination/amusement, if you can ignore the ET likeness for one moment. Challenging the often human misconception/fantasies that alien craft ie UFO's, are of a particular size that could be flown by human size beings..
I saw this earlier on the news and the same bloke who found this, previously said he'd found mummified bodied in Machu Pichu (iirc) and it later turned out they were previously buried children so credibility's suspect. My first thought was, even if they had been mummies, what are the chances the same bloke who discovered mummies in Machu Pichu also happens to discover dead aliens??? Who is he ffs, Indiana Jones.
Yup. I find it all very amusing, I love the lengths people will go to to prove something - bit like fake paintings, often a work of art in themselves.
I had to check the video to make sure he wasn't spewing that ****e at the Senate hearings we were looking at the other week. Thankfully not because if he was invited to give evidence to that, it would lose a lot of credibility for me.
Yeh, I only came across it because it was trending on twitter, so I thought i'd have a peep to see what shhite they are spouting.
Someone on tv said it looked like something Year 3 kids had made. I can assure you Year 3 kids would do better, it's that bad
What's worse is the reusable shopping bag. You have to use them 1000 times before the offset in environmental impact from them is less than just using disposable shopping bags. Most reusable bags probably won't last long enough. I think the focus should be on producing degradable bags rather than doing away with them.
It's like electric cars. Current tech, usually they will be better for environment in the long run... but they don't break even until about 100,000miles. Below that they've done more harm to the environment than a petrol car. (Fortunately most cars last longer than that these days). Then you get some ridiculous electric vehicles like the F150 truck and Hummer which, no matter if they go 200k miles, they've still caused more environmental damage than a small petrol car would have.
crazy is t it, they are cleverly marketed as ‘green’ I went to a talk by a prof/scientist Tony Ryan who discussed the ‘reusable’ plastic type bags and was shocked when he mentioned the number of ‘disposable’ bags that were needed to be dumped to make them a better choice
