I find it strange that there are fans who are still critical of Gareth Southgate who, for my money, is the best coach we have had sicne Sir Bobby Robson, Last night was a masterclass. Even with a effectively.second string line up, Scotland were played off the park in the first half. The freek own goal gave Scotland some hope at one point yet I felt England always had the match under control. Bellingham was superb.
Maybe because he threw away England's best chance of a major trophy at Euro 2020 (or 2021 as it was in the end). He's far too conservative as a coach. We had Italy by the bollocks and then let go. We should be easily beating Scotland with the players we have.
No doubt Southgate has had a great tenure, but his sometimes odd decision making and tactical naivety leave us asking ‘what if?’ and I think people are curious to see what someone else could do with this group (by which I mean before Kane passes his peak, so probably World Cup 2026). Imo the end of the Euros will be the right time for him to move on.
