Why was H & S needed? Hampden held over 130,000 then. 3 or 4 years after that there were 136,000 there for Celtic v Leeds. I know a couple Leeds lads who went to that. An interesting experience they said. 5 years earlier there were 127,000 there for the Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt European Cup Final.

I think Hampden still holds the record for the highest attendance in European football, about 150k for a Scotland v England game.

It was, back in the late 1930s. And, as far as I know the biggest for a club game, the 136,000 at the European Cup Final in 1960.

I obviously want England to do well but I couldn’t care less who the manager is.

I’m more of a France fan. England are my second team but don’t really care all that much.

Nobody killed at Hampden as far as I know. There was a tragedy at Ibrox during a Rangers-Celtic game in about 1970 or so....Celtic were winning 1-0 with a minute to go. Fans were leaving, going down a steep embankment. Rangers (Colin Stein, later Coventry) got an equaliser. Some of those leaving heard the roar, turned back and tried to get back up the stairs. They met others coming down and there was an almighty squash...Someone I knew, City fan, the late Trevor Dunn, was there at the time. He was okay.

PS. Ibrox was rebuilt over the next decade and became one of the safest stadiums in the UK and a benchmark for others ..

Ironically, perhaps the largest attendance, ever recorded for a sporting event in England, was for a game of egg-chasing ..

though it may have been beaten by a grand prix.

Really? Strange one that as the manager can directly affect the likelihood of success, such as in recent times under Southgate.

Unless I'm being whooshed that is!

International coaching is a weird one. You are not really there to develop the players, it is more of a motiviational job and being able to identify who is playing well and more importantly which players are suited to play against the upcoming opposition. Imagine being motiviated by Southgate!

I know it can never be answered now but I would love to have seen what Big Sam did with England. I can imagine the environment would have been a relaxed and fun one that might have reflected in their performances. Then again it could have ended up like a Stag do!

When was that, I can't find any rugby league or rugby union attendance anywhere near 150k?

I think the highest attendance for a single UK sporting event was 220k at Ascot.

Silverstone has a capacity of over 140,000 so it will probably be there.

Thought the record for eggchasing was for a replay at Odsal which was 102,000. There were officially 123,000, though far more in, for the first Wembley FA Cup Final.

Warrington vs Halifax 1954 RL Cup replay held at Odsal crowd officially listed as 102,569 on Wiki.

PS..Any guesses for the largest ever crowd for a musical event ie rock concert. I heard it on the radio the other day...

The record attendance for a single day at Silverstone is 160k (it was this year), with the total attendance over the full weekend 480k.

The highest official English football attendance is 126k at the old Wembley (though first ever game at the old Wembley was estimated to have 300k in attendance, but it was unticketed, so nobody knows how many were actually there).

All this talk of attendances and no mention of the Massive? Surely they break the record every week?
