I watch football but give pretty much zero attention to the what they get up to off the pitch unless it becomes big news .probably because of this It had never occurred to me that Henderson was considered some sort of activist for LBGT rights etc .
Hmmm, is condemnation hatred? I don't think it's case that people won't let it lie - if he brings it up himself then it's bound to reignite the issue. He's thrown further information into the mix, so it's only natural that that is examined also. He was criticised for his hypocrisy, yeah - but his latest statement is trying to shift the blame onto others not wanting him and not pleading with him to stay. It reads like he's claiming he was forced out, and I don't think that's true. Certainly the idea that he had no alternative than to end up where he has is rather hollow. I'm sure he could have found someone else to take him if he really felt that he had to move, rather than go somewhere where certain moral attitudes are diametrically opposed to those he claims to hold. Nobody else would have paid him as much as the Saudis (though I believe his claim that it's nowhere near the figure bandied about), so he could just admit that the money was too good to turn down and leave it at that. He'd have been better keeping quiet, imo. Anyway, he's got what he wants presumably, and we've got a revamped midfield that is starting to look the part.
both things were his choice. to support a cause then to betray a cause. it can never be OK to support rights in UK but the same rights then can be brutally suppressed elsewhere. it's the equivalent to my mind is going to 1980s south Africa and saying apartheid is good cos its what Africa does. anyway the other element is we all know Gerrard turned them down day 1 and within a week was scambling to go. nobody wanted henderson there til Gerrard went and the money is eye watering so he's lying twice to lfc fans independently. he can say what he likes but nobody turns down a chance to lift the europa on 150k a week to go play semi pro away from their family for 150k a week. he's on 650k with no tax. so thats lie 1. to then say you are not wanted when you are the captain at a top club and 33 when told you'll play games but not every week is clowning. to pull put the 12 year and want to say good bye and all that bullshit, lie 2. jog on rainbow laces. you'll note nobody really cares about fabinho going. just be honest in all things. I can say for sure if the day he appeared in a green shirt he said the offer was just amazing and he wanted to come then we would all be saying the same things but not caring
still not that interested in his views tbh Being cynical has it's advsantages as none of this stuff surprises me and as we type British staff of a British company (which is national security asset) are in saudi arabia maintaining aircraft which are being used to bomb Yemen .
Don't hold your breath. The Saudi Crown Prince has been invited for an official visit later this year. Tells you all you need to know about the attitude of HMG.
Couple things. It’s not like that at all because he hasn’t gone to Saudi and said being gay in Saudi is not ok? Not sure where you’ve got that from. You can obviously go to Saudi and support gay rights still. Or are you saying that every single footballer/manager/coach/office worker/engineer that goes over there to work suddenly hate gay people and think should all be prosecuted? and it’s generally reported that his wages are around 300k a week the 700k figure was banded about because that’s what he’d have to be earning in the uk to earn that he’s earning out there because of the tax free status.
it's realpolitik mate after all the ongoing contract brings in loads of dosh and supports lots of jobs and as i said BAE is a national security asset same as Rolls Royce .
Could just be my interpretation when reading them but some of the comments on here towards Hendo have a tinge of hatred in them imo
He's said that if wearing the rainbow armband disrespects the Saudi religion, then that's not right either. It's a bit like what Groucho Marx said - 'I have my principles. If you don't like them, I have some others'.
Some people (not mentioning any names) do tend to be a bit extreme sometimes. Personally, I was just surprised - Hendo was one of the last people I would have expected to go there. I was disappointed, but if he couldn't resist that last big bumper wage packet then ok, he's only human and his principles aren't quite as strong as they appeared to be. I'm more annoyed by him suggesting that he was pushed out, trying to smear the club to justify an action that he possibly feels a little guilty about. You're one of a few posters on here who seem to share my view that money is not the guiding principle of your life. If you're struggling yes, you grasp at any opportunity - but when you're already rich, or even just comfortable, other factors take precedence in your decision-making.
I don’t walk around with a rainbow armband or shoe laces either. Would you go to Saudi Arabia and walk around with no top on drinking a beer?
I wouldn't have gone there for all the money in the world but I've also long accepted that I'm in a extreme minority when it comes to views towards money. I've not read the interview so maybe my view on Hendo would change if I did. I just don't have an interest in it, he was great for us and now he's moved on, so have I. Hatred probably was a but strong tbf
You're right, he's gone and that should be the end of it, but like I said, he's reignited it by feeling the need to justify himself. I've only continued with the discussion because I find it fascinating. We're all only on here to talk and there have been some reasonable points presented by both sides. If it's a subject that I have no interest in then I don't contribute. For instance, I never get involved with the club finance discussions because they leave me cold. I have no interest in the money side of football beyond awe at how utterly obscene it's become. I'm no activist (apart from donating to relevant charities and using ethical banking), but I have always had opinions on human rights. I'm old enough to remember when being gay was outlawed in this country, and racial segregation was accepted in other so-called developed countries. We can't change other cultures by demanding they change, but we can at least show solidarity and support for oppressed minorities, even if it is all just talk.
I'm with Saint that his comments regarding the club and Klopp is what really annoys me the most. Klopp has literally given this a guy a career, which he did not deserve. A solid player in his prime - nothing more, nothing less. And thanks to Klopp, this guy won trophies and the media lapped it up as Hendo was the driving force behind it. At first real sniff that his place was under danger, he jumped ship and is now saying he was forced out. If he was the so called leader he and everyone thinks, he would have been a Milner or even Thiago - hang around, guide youngsters, offer the experience.
