I'm assuming the hold up is based on both clubs having differing valuations of the player's potential value based on performance? Must be a bugger to sort that out when nobody has any idea how we'll he'll perform for us. He'll be our biggest fee for years so I'm not surprised we're being hopefully very careful over how it could play out for us, but without knowing the details of the clause it's impossible to say what's going on.
It wont be an issue just about the price we pay but more about how we pay it. Cannot see it being £5m up front for one moment, more like so much now and the rest in instalments depending if and when so many appearance have been made. Add to that the possiblity that we might need to sell someone to raise the first instalment.
Is it just me who isn’t that fussed about this Philogene? I’m sure he’s a decent player but it sounds like we’re dropping £5 million on a kid who got the same amount of league goals and fewer assists last season than Longman did in the 21/22 season when he was on loan with us. Not saying Longman’s better at all but are there cheaper alternatives? If I remember correctly, we paid £750k for Longman on the back of that half-season when he got better goal contributions than Philogene did at Cardiff last season. Just saying, £5 million is a lot for a Championship club with no parachute payments or big player sales to blow on one player. The whole buy-back thing seems like hard-nosed negotiating by Villa but at what point do we walk away and pursue other targets this late in the window?
Even with player sales this summer, I’m not sure how Chelsea are keeping in line with FFP. This summer’s sales don’t even cover last season’s buys for Chelsea, let alone this summer’s.

No. I posted the same reservations. As far as I can see he looks like the typical fast winger with tricky feet and little end product who promises so much yet delivers so little and ends up spending a career journey manning around 2nd tier clubs playing bit part but never quite managing to deliver consistent performances. He looks exactly like that kind of player.
Chelsea made a net spend of £527,600,000 last year and a net spend of £146,250,000 this summer. How are they getting away with it? There’s the ridiculous 8-year contracts to amortise the fee but I thought UEFA introduced new rules to limit amortisation to 5 years.
The ones they got through before I think are ok. They're gambling that they can sell some of these assets down the line for profit or no loss
A bit like Cameron Stewart? Though I remember us signing him for about £300k from Man Utd. I guess that’s the market these days. A young player can have a half-decent season at a Championship club on loan with unremarkable numbers and is suddenly £5 million.
