Mike Dean confirms what we all knew, anyway . . . . the cheating bastard :steam:

Mike Dean declined to use VAR 'to save a mate' and fellow referee from grief

Mike Dean retired from refereeing at the end of last season after a 28-year career
Former Premier League referee Mike Dean deliberately didn't correct a mistake in a match to save his friend and fellow official, Anthony Taylor, from extra grief.

Dean was the video assistant referee (VAR) for Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Tottenham in August, 2022.

Just before a late Harry Kane equaliser Chelsea felt that they should have had a penalty after Cristian Romero pulled Marc Cucurella's hair.

Dean acknowledged a "really bad call" by not sending Taylor to review it.

"I missed the stupid hair pull at Chelsea versus Tottenham which was pathetic from my point of view," Dean told Simon Jordan's Up Front podcast.

"It's one of them where if I had my time again I'd send Anthony (Taylor) to the screen. I think I knew that if I did send him to the screen … he's cautioned both managers, he's had a hell of a game, it's been such a tough game, end to end.

"I said to Anthony afterwards: 'I just didn't want to send you to the screen after what had already gone on in the game'.

"I didn't want to send him up because he is a mate as well as a referee and I didn't want to send him up because I didn't want any more grief than he already had."

Dean became a dedicated Premier League VAR last season when he hung up his whistle at the end of the 2021-22 campaign after referring over 550 matches in the top flight.

He was stood down from VAR duty for two months after the Stamford Bridge incident.

Wirral-born Dean subsequently brought an end to his 28-year career as a professional official because being in the VAR hot seat was something that he ended up dreading.

Dean added: "That was a major error. If they don't score from the corner it is not as big an issue, b
ut I knew full well that I would be stood down the week after. I asked to take a bit of time off because it wasn't for me."

"I used to get in the car on a Friday and was dreading Saturday. I was thinking, 'I hope that nothing happens'. I used to be petrified sitting in the chair."

What are Sky paying Dean for , not many decisions to discuss today but he wouldn’t commit an opinion either way for any of them.
He was sh1te on the pitch and he’s no better in the studio.

Well that’s the carnival over for another year, lads

Once again Notting Hill Carnival marred by serious violence - including attacks on Police Officers. 75 of our colleagues assaulted, six bitten, one sexually assaulted, one in hospital. This is absolutely disgusting. No wonder our members dread policing this event.

Never policed anything on this scale but smaller local events always turned into a sh1t show once the alcohol levels were topped up.
Ask the Cumbrian bobbies if they enjoy the Appleby Fair, you'll not find many who do.

Having been I doubt the local bobbies would enjoy it, but that doesn’t excuse the inevitable trouble at Notting Hill ...

... to be fair most of the arrests at Appleby are for them hitting each other <laugh>

I find it hard to comprehend just how lazy , disrespectful and lacking in any sense of pride in self , others or surroundings that so many people have become in just a matter of a small number of years

Enjoyed watching Murray beating Moutet at the US Open, Moutet was a right arsehole but it made it entertaining.

Jack Draper got through the first round, he's one to watch. Only 21 but already had lengthy injuries and suffered badly from covid, looks absolutely fine now though. Top UK talent for me.

What the hell has happened to this country! Up to the 60s this was one of the most respectful and caring countries in the world. Oh, now I remember - discipline was made illegal!

It's this massive and illogical sense of entitlement imo.

People too often say, "I know my rights!!!"

Yes pal, but you definitely don't know your responsibilities.

In our dirt poor pit village the women would polish the front door step and swill the pavement the width of the house. If the neighbours were old or infirm theirs would be done without question.

No one had scruffy back gardens, piles of crap or an old settee outside ...

... and kids had to take a telling from anyone on the street if you were lucky, a clip if you weren't.
