refs deserve every bit of abuse and more and I actively now encourage Sunday league refs having their tyres slashed as a result of this. in fact Howard Webb should be dealt with by 007. another bald super villain to be put down
Need to find that post on face book There is a group of two or three or four who seriously look like they have beef with the club or klopp
Imo, there are two related but still distinct problems: the abuse of officials by players and the poor standard and protectionist attitude of the officials. If the attitude persists that one is justified by the other then they'll never be resolved. It's easy for us to say that better refereeing would reduce the abuse, but frankly most decisions upset one side or the other, so while the culture of dissent is considered "just part of the game" it'll continue until something is done to effectively reduce it. Atm it's a trench battle between players and coaches on one side facing officialdom on the other. Both need to get their act together and realise that neither of them are blameless victims of the other - co-operate to make the game fairer and better.
Another thing to consider - the referees get paid whatever they do, however incompetent they are. Their careers move along nicely, they face no consequences for their ineptitude (other than the occasional stand down from the fixture list, maybe). For players and clubs, the consequences of incompetent and/or vindictive referees can be massive. Referees can do whatever they like, players can't.
There's no accountability, and that's a big, big problem. They're a law unto themselves, and a system of impartial scrutiny needs to be introduced.
Co operation would definitely be a benefit to the game. But while refs (recent revelations show var is also influenced) can be influenced by on field actions, then it will continue. It does my head in when you watch a local Derby one week and tackles are flying everywhere, no cards, given and even fouls are in short supply. Next week the same ref in blowing up for every little thing. Yes the game is subjective, but its like rules change depending on how they are feeling.
. Mike Dean's admission should be a massive scandal and the whole refereeing community subjected to intense scrutiny and made to clean up their act - but it seems like it's just being hand-waved away. He's still shamelessly pontificating on refereeing decisions in the press though he has lost any vestige of credibility he might have had.
the Dean "admission" confuses me as it appeared to make no sense so i'm tempted to think it was said for effect - makes me wonder if he has a book coming out .
Can you explain why you think it's confusing? From what I read he claimed to have refrained from sending the ref to review something that he (Dean) felt he should have done because he thought his mate was having a tough game and didn't want to make it harder for him. To me, that's a plain abrogation of his responsibility to ensure, to the best of his ability, that a game is conducted fairly.
Think it’s fair to say most people are in Shock at the stupidity of the admission what’s even more astonishing is the lack of subsequent action ref admits to cheating No one blinks twice Incredible
I don't mind the admission, I want to hear referees speak out and talk about the decision making process. It's what he's admitting to that I have an issue with; he didn't do his job, and the reason was to protect a fellow referee from a potential backlash (not even guaranteed backlash)
I hate to talk about conspiracy theories, but it does look as if we are not being favoured by refs because a) we called out Tierney and b) we called out Mr Elbows and they're protecting their own.
it just didn't ring true to me . "I missed the stupid hair pull at Chelsea versus Tottenham which was pathetic from my point of view," Dean told the Up Front podcast. "It's one of them were if I had my time again, what would I do? I'd send Anthony to the screen. "I said to Anthony afterwards: 'I just didn't want to send you to the screen after what has gone on in the game.' "I didn't want to send him up because he is a mate as well as a referee and I think I didn't want to send him up because I didn't want any more grief than he already had." He needs to make up his mind if he missed the incident or he was looking after his mate .
oh hold on just checked the video and he couldn't intervene as Spurs were attacking so no Var involvement allowed
Ok, I realise not everyone will want to read all of this, but I want to expand on a similar post I made yesterday. The game has descended into an us v them battle between players and authority, but let’s strip away personalities and look at the basics. Two groups of people want to have a competitive game - they know that left to themselves they’re going to argue the toss over every contentious issue and get nowhere, so they appoint, by mutual consent, an arbiter to make those decisions for them, and whose word is final. They’re all working together to make a game possible. Throw the personalities back into the mix and what do we get? Instead of arguing with each other people argue with the ref, who then develops a feeling of being got at from all sides - whatever decision he makes, someone disagrees and lets him know in no uncertain terms. He’s treated like a hated authority figure and eventually becomes just that, rather than someone trying to facilitate a fair competition. Now we have: footballers complaining, correctly, that refs get too much wrong - and refs complaining, correctly, that players are abusive and cheat which makes fair refereeing almost impossible. Both are correct, but they’re both in the wrong too - they’re using the poor standard of the other side to excuse their own. The only way forward is for them to have their heads banged together and made to realise the basics I started this mitoesque post with. Everyone is there to make a game as fair as is humanly possible, so they all need to co-operate to this end, or it just won't work. Players need to stop blatantly cheating and berating the ref for every decision they don’t like, and refs need to accept that they must improve their standards and stop trying to deflect all criticism.
