It's an education point for Mini Lincoln. Somewhat similar to when I make him watch comic relief so he can realise and appreciate how lucky he is! See son, I know you don't have the latest xbox but at least we don't live in Middlesbrough <laugh>

Tom, does SR give you a free pie at every game or something? Why would they invest in the club unless its to make money? They've openly said their entire plan for Saints is to buy cheap and sell on.

She did, and it took letting the squad atrophy from being in Europe to almost getting relegated (which would have made it a major net loss).

SR is a business. It’s goal is profit. BUT, they will not have achieved that with their level of investment and the debt structure. They only make a profit through the long term and sustained success of the club. There is no possible way that selling Lavia, JWP etc is about return on investment, it’s about creating a sustainable cost base, based on current revenues. And it’s about having a core of players who want to, and are capable of, success at a championship level.

There are reasons to be angry and disappointed at SRs actions, but to think they took those actions to try to make a quick buck is bonkers.

No, the plan is to buy top young talent to develop at the club and then sell to big clubs when they come calling. Relegation has meant we've had to sell more players this summer than was planned and SR are partly to blame. But they are not filling their pockets with the money made from transfers. The majority will be reinvested back into the club, either through player purchases or simply balancing the books to comply with FFP regulations.

To be clear I wasn't suggesting that. Just that most owners will have a financial plan of sorts to see a profit. Obviously you'll get those who just want a plaything but that's less common now imo.

Looks like I’ll have to set my sites further afield for an away game!

Said plan won’t be through selling players and then the club as the numbers don’t add up

Using transfermarkt figures SR are currently sitting at a loss of circa 98m before any operating losses since they have taken over are factored in.

Quite clearly we can’t plug even the 98m with sales and then sell the club and it even zero out for SR. I’m not sure we have 98m left to sell. Perhaps if all of KWP, Sulemana, Alcaraz, Adams and ABK and just about get there. But then have no real team. And then the whole club would need to be sold for more than the combined operating losses to date. And that is just to break even. I don’t know what non transfer operating losses are if any

If all those players were sold and the club not sold you would be left with a club that likely isn’t operationally breaking even and has very little chance of getting promoted and also won’t be sold for what it was bought for.

If SR want to make money from this they need to get the club promoted again

Yes I know all of that.

Again, I wasn't suggesting that they were doing this by selling players. I was merely replying to Tom's post which suggested no owners make money out of football clubs.

That's a valid point, but most owners don't see that as a priority in the short term. The amount of money required to firstly buy and then maintain a big football club is huge. It cost SR £100mill to buy us. They've probably invested double that since they took over. They're not going to see the original 100mill again unless they sell up. It's the money they've invested since then they'll want a return on. And the best way of doing that is getting back in the PL. But relegation comes at a heavy price, both literally and metaphorically. Very few owners can withstand the costs without having to sell players. Fans never like it when we sell 3 or 4 of our best players in one window but I'm afraid it was unavoidable this window. SR are backed by a very wealthy man, but Solak hasn't got bottomless pockets. That combined with Championship FFP regulations (which some people seem to ignore or be unaware of) meant that unpopular decisions had to be made for the sake of the long term benefits of the club.

Do championship ffp regulations bite instantly over one season? Isn’t the PL are three year average? I guess the championship is different?

Because didn’t Forest have a weird situation where they could spend massive amounts in one window because their previous ones weren’t counted by the premier league ?

No but we can't assume we'll be promoted.

But is it still three years? I guess I was misleading when I said bite instantly. Can we breach at the end of this season if not promoted? Or is an average time period still used

I’d be more concerned about that looking like one of the hardest away games this year
