S'funny how so many people that "manage" or lead organisations have the "Foot in Mouth disease", often called "Talking Bollocks Disease", or like doing a Ratner. Blatter's a joke. Wonder whether he would have repeated his comment in South Africa before they had the world cup.

I wonder wha the FIFA policy is on DIVERSITY - a word that is used quite a lot these days.

    Willy boy

In a nutshell I hate racists as you should be able to tell
I posed this albeit in a weird way
What is racism? There are so many sorts are there not so how do you determine the catergories
Terry is no racist he is just hated as he is also the captain of Chelsea and England and we roast our own
If he is guilty well there is no doubt about that then him and Suarez are proper ****ed should Suarez get more or less ?
    It's a hornets nest
I make a point of ensuring no one gets away with a racist slur in my company but how to police that in sport will mean that we need a fall guy
    Will that change anything ?
My money is on no what's more we will see allsorts of claims and counter claims

    The fact is, Davey boy

No - I couldn't tell from your post that you hate racists. Because you didn't say that, in fact, you appeared to be saying that we shouldn't even try to stop racism because it wouldn't work so what's the point?

If you want to make a point, can I suggest you actually say what you mean?

Instead, you go around muddying the waters by implying that offense against gypsies (or what passes for gypsies in this country of ours) is exactly the same as racist offense. When we all know it isn't.

If John Terry is guilty of racially abusing Anton (or any other black or mixed-race footballer) he deserves punishment. So does Suarez, so does anyone.

That should happen irrespective of whether it'll stop other people being racists - things that are this wrong shouldn't become tolerated just because they happen. And for Blatter to suggest that a handshake at the end of the game is enough to sort the matter out is just plain wrong, and if a minister said such a thing we'd already have seen their resignation.

Now, I don't believe that I misunderstood what you'd previously posted at all. You yourself do not appear to know what racism actually is, and at which point it begins - you ask that very question above. I'm sure that there are any number of posters here that have experienced racism first hand that can tell you exactly what it is, and the effect it has. And it needs to be met head on - no hornet's nest, just a determination that things which are abhorrent will not be tolerated. Not by anyone, not by the captain of the England football team, not by the head of FIFA, not by the star striker for Liverpool, not by so-called 'fans' of football clubs, not by the bloke you walk past in the street - nobody should be expected to receive this abuse and simply accept it as a fact of life, and nobody (whether they have a squeaky-clean past or a record of criminality and infidelity) should be allowed to get away with it.

Have some sympathy with Swords point of view, articulately put. But what we have to remember is that there are degrees of racism.

A Scot calls Rooney an English c*nt on the pitch, no one bats an eyelid.

Rooney calls Drogba an Ivorian c*nt, the same.

But call someone who is black a black c*nt or someone from Pakistan a P*ki c*nt and what you bring in to play is the unacceptable side of the Western World's history. Slavery at its worst, and the tyranny of Empires at best.

That's why it's the most serious slur of all. And Blatter can't see that.

I like the fact that Black Culture is claiming back some of the bad names as their own. ****** used widely. As far as I'm concerned, we're all ******s.

Where do we draw the line? If a player is insulted for being fat? Ginger? Tall? Short? Skinny? Do we call in the PC brigade if a player is called "baldy"? I think its an absolute joke and to think he might lose the Captaincy of his Country over this is laughable. Needless to say my opinion of our big strong center-half has gone down big time over this. He should have been a man about it and shook hands and let it go when Terry came to him post-game.

And I can't honestly think I'm the only one on this board who thinks this way either.[/QUOTE]

Swords - I think you need to accept the fact that it is definitely racism, maybe Terry/Blatter did not mean it in a hateful way but it is racism none the less.

And just to clarify on where the line is drawn - the law in this country does it for us.

It is a criminal offense to call someone a black C, a gay C, a crippled C or indeed a catholic C, it is all considered a hate crime.

It is fine to call some one a tall, fat, ginger, short, bald, skinny C,

It is a very sensitive issue in the UK, probably not one anyone can really understand until you've been on the recieving end of it.

If the captain of an Irish team used sensitve religious insults on the pitch to an opposition player would it not be recieved very badly in Ireland?

Football is not immune to the law, it doesn't matter if it is a highly charged environment, my office gets a bit highly charged sometimes and if i turn around and call some one a black C i would be out of the door chap, irrelevant of how i intended the comment to be recieved, and rightly so.

You comments surprise me a little, Irish people suffered from a similiar atitude in the UK for years, the terms mick and thick appeared in the same sentence far to often once upon a time and i'm pleased to say this doesn't happen anymore, I would of thought you would understand this is not the PC brigade kicking off this is proper racism and should be stamped upon immediately.

Blatters comments are unforgivable, i look forward to my son's under 11's match at the weekend where our best player - a black kid can now look forward to the opposing team racially abusing him throughout the match which will apparently be fine so long as they shake his hand at the end...

Those at the top of the game must set the example for future generations, this is not the example we want them to set.

Warnock: Racism row was getting to Anton... thanks for the break

    By Sportsmail Reporter
Last updated at 4:06 PM on 17th November 2011

QPR boss Neil Warnock believes the international break has given Anton Ferdinand vital time to put the racism row with Chelsea and England captain John Terry to the back of his mind and focus on football.

Warnock claimed the furore over the incident in which Terry is alleged to have racially abused the defender caused Ferdinand to make an error against Manchester City, in QPR’s next match after the west London derby against Chelsea.

Troubled: the row has taken its toll on Anton Ferdinand

‘He really defended poorly for the first goal against Manchester City but I wasn’t surprised because the days before that, with all that was going on, were a nightmare for him,’ Warnock told the Evening Standard.

‘The international break came at a good time for him. He has had a chance to put it to the back of his mind, get it out of the way and get on with things.’

QPR said they had received a death threat addressed to Ferdinand in the wake of the racism allegations, but the manager hopes the 26-year-old will be back to his best for QPR’s game at Stoke on Saturday.

Time off: Neil Warnock says Anton Ferdinand used the break to get his head straight

Ferdinand has not spoken outright about the issue, but in a statement released on October 31 he said he has ‘very strong feelings on the matter.’

The police and Football Association are still investigating the incident, while Chelsea are conducting their own investigation into chants of ‘Anton Ferdinand – you know what you are,’ during a Champions League game at Genk from a section of their fans.

Another investigation into racial abuse is also under-way at Chelsea, as they respond to a complaint about an alleged comment directed at Blues striker Daniel Sturridge by one of their own supporters.

All this comes at a time when FIFA President Sepp Blatter has gone on record to claim that there is no racism in football, making comments which Anton Ferdinand's older brother, Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand, has decreed as 'almost laughable' and 'condescending'.

Not sure who that salvo was aimed at Northolt! - but I think the thread is quite constructive. You have to address these things

Yes, Swords is struggling to see why something racist, said in the heat of the moment, is worse than other abuse. It is for all the reasons that have been given. However I don't think it makes the abuser a racist necessarily. I doubt Terry is a racist. He was just plain wrong to give in to that kind of language when his blood was up. This is pretty much the conclusion that Tony Fernandes reached

Doesn't matter, whether he is not, if someone breaks your nose, will you feel better to hear they're not violent? Why is everyone assuming he's not racist anyway? A bit of previous.

    PREMIER LEAGUE STATEMENT

Posted on: Thu 17 Nov 2011
Following a meeting of all 20 Premier League Clubs the League has today issued the following statement:

'The English game has been at the forefront of tackling racist behaviour and other forms of discrimination.

'Everybody in the game in England understands any form of racism is totally unacceptable.

'There are still issues, as there are in society, so with our partners, Kick It Out, the PFA and The FA, we must remain committed and vigilant to maintaining the standards we have set and confronting any incidents that occur.

'There is no place for discrimination in football and we will continue to strive to eliminate it.'

You can't break someone's nose, deliberately anyway, and not be violent.

You can make a racist remark in the heat of the moment and not be a racist. However, if there's a history of racist remarks - your point well made - then that's different. May be Terry is a racist if the source you quote is a reliable one.

Thank you Cannock, that's all I wanted to know.

I do however still feel that this wave of sympathy for a Pro Footballer that was called a bad name and who's earning thousands of pounds per week to do fu*k all is ridiculous particularly given the current economic climate and the state of a lot of people's lives. Ferdinand a victim? Give me a break.

This whole situation shows that on the whole the Human species is really not as advanced as we like to think we are, and are essentially just a bunch of idiots floating through space

I haven't read the whole thread but I think Swords is commenting on appearance rather than race. Calling some ginger, skinny, bald etc is their appearance my friend.

I think it may be time to put this thread to bed Northy.
The written word, especially when written in a shortened form, in a hurry, can be easily misinterpreted.
I get the impression that some people are hinting that Swords may be a racist. I did have some sympathy with what Swords was trying to say, but, if anyone accuses me of being a racist, without knowing anything about me, I will be seriously pissed off!! For that reason, I think this should be stopped before we all start falling out after making incorrect assumptions!

Speaking personally, I don't think anything I have seen is racist here and I certainly don't think Swords is. He raised points that have been at the back of my mind. There will be people who say to Anton Ferdinand, look, Terry was wrong but you've made your point, move on. Others will say, Terry stepped over the line, however maddened he was at the time, and must be called to account. I'm in the latter camp.

The racism row evokes a lot of feelings and I get muddled as I am typing on a iPhone so things get lost in translation or fat fingers

My point is define racism? as it seems there is black racism and many other forms. Terry it was clear said those words he cannot deny that! So he is on a context trip seen by many to be wriggling out of it.
If they stamp it out as they must then my other point is equality to all from that day on ... If Terry goes down then when for examples sake Diouf repeats some of the stuff he has said in the past then he is also thrown the book

Also what happens if players come forward about an old incident with proof. The clubs will stand with their players as they are investments after all Who would police it ?
Why stop with players The fans chants will all need to be censored and clubs fined

I will state one thing to reverse the whole thing

If a white player claimed he was a victim of a race related insult from a black player ... My guess is that the black player would get a lot more grief

We are all equal and so at least I hope they will bring in clear guidelines to define what is racism and what is the punishment for those caught doing it

Define it first then everyone knows where football stands as the culture needs to change
